Krita has a lot of features and brushes compared to the other two, but it can be demanding on performance if you use any of the more complicated brushes.

I've been doing that now. I also use fewer layers nwo that I use a graphics tablet to color

I used to do hand sketch, scan in, water color, scan in, then mouse painting

so the layers were partially for accuracy

Perhaps because I grew up not having digital as an option, I find charcoal and paint is nice. You get a very intimate connection to your work

You can use your fingers or nails or random things around the house

and just have magic happen

Will warn charcoal does not like skin oils

I keep paper wherever my skin rests or wear gloves

otherwise the charcoal might get pockets or pits

Well depends on the kind of jawlines you want to work on. Masculine jawlines tend to have a more square ish feel than femenine vibes, whereas femenine ones arent are prominently square, and more smooth to the base (tho it can vary depending on the headshape overall tbf)
good references can be very helpful when you are lost with jawlines :) seeing photo references can give you an idea of a kind of jaw you may want to draw

Generally you usually use layers if you don't want something to interfere with something else, or if you want to add a certain filter that edits your colors. Once you get the hang of it you can use 30+ layers like me!

@glacial ridge I do recommend trying out new styles to improve your base styles, and the same thing goes for different mediums! just switching from digital to traditional (watercolor, acrylic, ink, pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastel, etc.) can be a great way to expand your style. i highly recommend watercolor at least once, but anything works really. different styles too, realistic anatomy studies can help you stylize better in some cases.

Assuming the bottom is a reference and this is digital...you'll want to get the basic shape of the light green moss and the dark green moss.

#

Fill in the basic shape with the darkest appropriate color to to use as a base, apply below your mushroom sheet (removing the grey or cutting out the mushroom shapes).
select a textured brush (this will vary by program) that has a sponge like texture and use that to dab color 1-2 shades lighter than the base to create the illusion of moss.
repeat this step adding highlights in white (using dodge) or the 4 shades lighter than the base.

For more stylized moss with clean lines, try to follow the basic shape of the lightest green and the darkest green

What I would pinpoint myself is that you used a very soft light and shading on the hair, with changing colour hues, and it looks very good, realistic kind of, but then you have a jacket which u shaded with only black, and have very harsh lines

And it looks like two different pieces, I might been traumatised though, because I used to shade with black all the time at the beginning lol

I means there’s nothing wrong with using black, but try to use the minimum amount of it, and put some browns into the mix too!

Btw there’s nothing wrong with working with references! Not to confuse with copying, but I always do work with references

ye i agree with sylvia on how the eyes are lost on the face. Since you put so much detail and love on the rest of the piece, it feels like the face is lacking rendering but thats just workihng with the piece a bit more :)

@shell sphinx Just from looking at that portrait, this may be a more style oriented thing but dont be afraid to use a hard edged brush to get some crisp shadows. Right now it looks like youre only using soft brushes which imo make it more difficult to depict a strong or directional light source
