The blue outline doesn't really go with his skintone (but you're on the right track) - maybe you could use the skin colour but go really dark with it? So almost brown? But the hair is looking much better! You're doing a great job!

maybe make the outline of it more of a purple but thats it
if you arent already, id pull up some vanilla sprites from the game and compare your color choices directly. thats the best way to tell if your sprite looks like it fits with the palette or not

Ah alright. I guess I mean it's hard to tell since the drawings are so small that there's not enough space to add realistic details. The proportions are nice, but the eyes still look sort of "webcomic-style". Like I said it's not really large enough for the details to show though.

Def map out your anatomy first. You tend to have the skull resting directly on the next and it's a lil unnatural? The head/spine connection is more of a line than a ball on a stick u kno?

They can. But you need to imply direction and volume to show they're not one and the same (assuming ur not going rly stylised)

@lament turtle if you are interested in developing a more realistic but still stylized style, i would recommend both studying actual real people (life drawing, that kinda thing,) or looking at western comic book artists (DC, Marvel, etc.) they tend to have a more realistic yet stylized thing going on. i think what you are struggling with right now, and why a lot of people are calling it cartoony, is that it still looks heavily inspired or referenced by anime, specificallly in the face.

yeah though the most important thing when youre trying to develop a "realistic" style is.... drawing from real people. referencing other artist's already stylized work is only going to get you so far, and in fact can cause negative results if it's the sole source of reference and development.

learning how to do silhouettes is another component of learning and i think thats when tracing helps some people, however, i always try to encourage referencing rather than tracing because its better exercise for problem solving skills

like even if you are doing the overpainting brand of tracing youll get the proportions right and it will match up nicely with the refs but it all will feel so plasticy cus you have no knowledge of texturing and rendering

to point out specifics i'd say the "cartoony" vibe is coming from the exaggerated facial features (big eyes, small nose/mouth) and large head in comparison to the neck and body. realistically heads are going to be somewhere around 1/2 the width of the torso (of an average/skinny person) even if they are sickly skinny
ofc its up to you if you like it that way and want to keep the eyes big for example like you mentioned, but working on those other specific areas could help your style be less "cartoony" looking. shape also plays a factor, and especially what echoes anime stylization is that the chins are nearly a pinpoint or at least extremely narrow, and then the cheeks/jaw are very rounded out

I’ve literally been trying to find my prismacolour blender for like an hour and a half. Finally found it in the same place I had looked 100 times, just 40% smaller then I remembered. It was originally like half taller then the pencil and somehow I sharpened it down to that in like a week of using it years ago
