For instance, this creature on Deviantart (Not mine of course). The artist took the proboscis of a horsefly and pieces from a few other animals to make this.
The limbs are from a giraffe I think.

I really like these. I feel like you've answered your own question! I'd suggest doing studies of what you said, looking up references for beaches, jungles, mangroves. Even if you're drawing rather than going directly to pixel art, translating them to a drawing will help you understand how they "work". But I think these are great and the palette is very nice

I like it! If you want to mimic what CA does more, the first thing I notice is he uses much more dramatic tonal contrast. For both Maru and Abigail there are 6 tones each and the lighter tones get warmer (pushed towards red) Here I've swatched these and set the darkest & lightest side by side
Also if you're making this portrait for stardew, I'd also suggest putting the portrait background color behind your character, as a white background will make your colors look different. The better the context, the better you can see!

you can shade them on a different layer.
so if you don't like it- you can always remove the layer or hide it.
for shading it depends on how detailed you want to get.
if you are going for simple- you can just do a white dot at an angle to express some light shine.
a bit more detail- you can add a lil bit of black or dark gray in the middle for the pupils
if you wanna go super crazy- you can add additionally glossing effects
or textures for the individual fibers that make up the eye.

I like to make the top half of the iris much darker and have it fade a little into the main colour, or sometimes just a more saturated top half and a lighter less saturated bottom half. doing a pupil might look creepy in some cases, like the character is staring intensely XD

@tropic crown It is quite difficult making an animal look like it belongs with human characters. ConcernedApe's characters tend to have large-ish eyes, and be made up of chunky but well rendered shapes with colourful palettes. Perhaps to make your rework blend in a little better, you could make his eyes bigger and more expressive, add some purpley shading to his body and define fur by chunkier shapes rather than a dither. You don't really see dithered shading in his human characters.

Yes it is. It was my attempt to capture the facial shape of the original portrait while also getting it from a more frontal view.
Of course, now the more I look at it the more I don't like it, so I've just changed it in the current edit.

Heavily referencing stuff does take a while Konrad. You're obviously paying attention to the detail, and because you've chosen a JoJos pose and character, you have perspective to consider too etc. Not to mention the style of JJBA is very complicated

I did some traditional art but the markers bled right through the paper.

there are specialized marker pads out there, i usually get mine at Hobby Lobby (if you're USA). if you're using copics, the copic store sells booklets specifically for their markers (though through my own experience with them, they also bleed through, though not as severely. I'd still recommend putting something like a thin piece of cardboard behind it.)
if you're not USA, you may have to special order them online (should have them if Amazon is in your country)
regular paper, like printer paper or sketch pads meant for graphite, will sadly bleed heavily not only in the paper, but also through it

npnp, and hey it's a learning experience. art is primarily learning new things and showing off your progress along the way, so it's good that you at least tried. If you have no feasible way of getting marker paper, maybe try putting the cardboard behind it for the time being when you draw? though the spread can be a little rough,,,

@tropic crown You could make the cloak look more like a 3D object if you apply some blended shading to the cel shading you've already got. You've already started to soften the shading with the speckles here and there, but just more of that dithering would help blend the light out a bit.

I probably should mention that though you can't see it here, Grandpa has a touch of transparency to him as well, to up the ghosty vibe. it's hard to tell here, so I'm thinking about increasing it, but I don't want to make him too transparent because you need to be able to see him.

hey, if it helps, my brother used to tell me my art sucked but that i should try selling it anyway. it did eventually push me to open commissions, which while i can't do them all the time, he's said he's proud of me for taking the step and making some extra money of it.
*i need to clarify here that my brother telling me my art sucked but could be worth money was high praise from him. he's very supportive he just talks via insults and snark. he's actually very sweet if you know how to translate it.

I've never been good at composition, so it's always hit or miss. How can I improve the composition of the right character in a way that is similar to the composition of the left one?

Hrm, you've got a bit of a dynamic angle in the right one. Maybe you could exaggerate the perspective more, eg make the bow and hand larger and the hooves smaller going down at more of a point. At the moment the proportions are wonderful but also a little isometric. It almost looks like the image needs to be rotated which is not what you were aiming for i don't think.
Orrr maybe put a curve of the arm that's drawing the bow too, to make it similar to the very swift movement in the left image

Weird concept: The asymmetry that malijuana mentioned on the shirt is there in the original portrait, and it feels almost like an asymmetric military jacket. If you played that up with larger buttons and boxier shoulders, it might justify a mid-thigh cape length as a military style thing

@tropic crown i would suggest making the "scarf" look a bit less stiff
and maybe either reduce the size of the pants near the shoes as if it were tucked in to the boots or make the boots less chunky and "square"? like, define the heel or smth
