my main rec for starting a fic is to try to put a spin on the "farmer moves in town thru grandpa's death" because a majority of the fics start that way and it's not a great hook when you've read it a dozen times

i think you can still use the grandpa thing but it'd be good to at least start with something else or introduce the grandpa thing a little later

but i mean if u prefer to start that way, that's totally ok, at the end of the day it's just my own opinion

so i came across the art of someone i am no longer friends with

like yeeeeeears ago

like the last time i talked to them was the day after i graduated high school and before that we last talked in like 8th grade bc we had a falling out

and lord, they have, improved with their art

i'm feeling a mix of depression and determination to get better

i can't feel too bad because they went to a prestigious art school and i did not go to art school, it's my fault for not really looking at references and attempting to seriously improve

maybe i should change that

i think i'm good at coloring, my colors are decent, it's mostly figures and forms i need to do better with so maybe i'll start doing more figure studies and looking at real faces

ok i see some of her art that doesn't use references and i feel less bad but it's still great art

Sabaku no Toshi is a desert mad max land that runs on anarcho-capitalism, Nevado is a winter wasteland that has the gates of hell in one of it's mountains, Tumba the Violencia is a volcanic wasteland where a war of gods happened thousands of years ago, Katzoneko is a caribbean inspired set of islands that are filled with beastmen besiegued by pirates at every turn, and Kusa no Oka is one of the two bastions of order and normalcy, Japan+American culture, the other bastion of order is not pictured cause the map is still not finished lol

Probably best way to describe it other than awesome, is that it's really exciting.

Yeah, It's part of a campaign, the image is pretty old now, and we added the fix with paint (which makes it look not that presentable unlike this version lol) the campaign has gone for like...3 years now? 4? and they enjoy the setting plenty

The tower in the middle is Suparairu Toshi, the entryway to the pantheon of the gods, it was once extremely closed off to only the most devout, but new gods inhabit the pantheon and they are much more relaxed in how they do things, so there is now multiple cities living around the tower in both floating islands or next to the ground to it

The cultures in each location are different, Kusa No Oka is a blend of America and Japan, as in the American optimistic spirit and Japanese culture of order and discipline, Katzoneko carries a south american type of culture, with friendliness and empathy scarred by years of war and combat, Sabaku is Australia+Middle east+some chinese undertones all affected by a land without rules. Kinzoku Shi (Not pictured, the other bastion of order) is portrayed as Hong Kong+Europe+New York, and the few people that live in Nevado carry russian and Serbian undertones to them

it was all thanks to the discovery of the use with soul crystals, that is, the soul of magical creatures, and how they could be harnessed for power, I wanted to play that aspect realistically and instead of the usual "let the magic live, don't hunt these magical creatures for their souls" all of humanity basically took to the way we humans did with mass farming

regulated mass farming of magical creatures for their souls, using them for powering up cities with clean electricity

Drakes, the once deadly and dangerous monsters where chosen as the cattle, these days it's almost impossible to find a wild drake, as all of them are now docile and managed as cattle for soul farmers

of course some animals are protected and hunting them for their soul is illegal, like unicorns or pixies

but with the advent of technology, magical poachers are now a thing

essentially the entire setting is approaching the end of an era, as they go from high fantasy, to urban fantasy, Adventuring guilds being phased out by Oddjob apps for adventurers to download on their phones and take whatever job pops up

classical swordmen and archers being phased out by gunmen as only the most skilled of them mantain relevancy

Onis and Elves being forced to adapt to society as they are no longer the strong races that could decimate puny men by the masses, since an Oni as strong as it may be, can't stop a 44. magnum

the campaign is currently going into the underground, which is an entirely different world alltogether, seeing as it's not actually sets of caves connected, but rather the planet is entirely empty inside with floating islands where people live

this is based around the concept of magic of the setting

Magic comes from the heavens, which not only encompasses your regular magic, but also the rules of the world that need to be obeyed (Aka. the rules of physicis, thermodynamics, etc

Anti-magic is the void in between the magic, and it comes from the center of the world, from that comes the void of everything, the void of life, the void magic itself, and the void of the laws of physics

thus the more deep you go underground

the more laws of physics are ignored

until you reach a certain point where light can come from no source and the world is hollow inside

where magic is crushed by the pressure being exerted by anti-magic

thus evolving and transforming into strange new powers

the underground is in general extremely weird and exempt of a lot of rules from above ground

Same with the motion of time, it's something that we have to deal with since a few generations, you've translated that into the game.
Same with the way humans have harnessed technology and agriculture vs wildlife. Which in your world as well as this one has shifted the hierarchy of where we stand as humans (for example what you said with the Onis and the elves as well next to the animals/magical creatures being farmed/exploited)

you've looked at what archeologically exists in these lands and what it did to certain cultures and you've translated that into not just a theoretical story of cultural back grounds and political systems but you've actually made a map

I can go on with the facets you've explained but I hope it's a bit clearer now.

it's a mixture of Imperial Japan/China and North Korea/nazi germany, imperialistic and brutal regime that basically brainwashed most of it's soldiers.

the people are still normal and there have been wars to fix the land from the inside

but the regime is basically way too strong to topple and the masses are way to affected to work together

the biggest problem that comes is that due to it's nature, is extremely hard to intervene, due to it being underwater

and as a warring nation, it has created many bad opinions of fishmen around the world

thus basically ensuring those that suffer in that regime get next to no help, as the men in power are so horribly bad and the nation is so exclusionary that no one can help them

Kusa no Oka, it's neighboring country basically holds decades of discrimination against the fishmen due to them nuking the Kusa capital during a world war

this doesn't help that the fishmen nation leaders are crafty as all hell

ensuring that the population stays controlled as their technology advances quickly from a big network of spies and sleeper agents

the world sees them as the objective bad guys, and the leaders want to be seen as that, the normal citizens are damned from either a) staying in their country and living a life of hunger and suffering or b) managing to escape and face discrimination from anyone that sees them as they can only see fishmen as the ones that engaged in multiple wars and killed hundreds of thousands

the planets in the background are sharp and not the big black blured object, it doesn't really "make sense". It's the only thing that seems off to me at least!

It's a stronger image, you could also play around with the planets, have a slightly smaller version of your last planets (in the other image) on top of these ones, with maybe a lower transparency. Apart from the planets you could revisit the background and how you want it to flow, I'd suggest looking at gas cloud nebulas.

But that's why I asked where you want it to go. because that's the most important.

designdoll is good for poses, I use it all the time. the only downside is if you have the free version it doesn't save, but it's kind of like a wooden posing doll but the proportions are changeable to a great degree
