@lament turtle i myself had to transition slowly bc i had no tablet for awhile. which meant sketching traditionally>photocopying (at least back then. now u can just take a pic on ur phone and transfer)>and then work digitally. you could try this whether or not you have a pen

i know at least one person on here that does all their digital stuff by mouse

there’s also simply tablets like ipads that work for a lot of people

it’s definitely an experimentation to see what works for you in transferring from traditional to digital

and a lot of it comes down to what money you have too and what you can afford

Here are some eyes from an artist that I really like. I love the variation they use. They aren't really anime eyes but they might be able to help incorporate more realistic styles while still staying cartoony. To give proper credit the artist is GoldenTar on deviantart but proper warning there is some kind of more... Uh. Questionable and suggestive drawings on there so so keep that in mind.

hmm. well it's a mix of both isn't it? if you use a tutorial, it's not like you straight up copy it. you learn from it and adapt it into your own style

I definitely didn't do this in minutes lol, I've been procrastinating bc I got wisdom teeth surgery done yesterday. That said, I'm gonna be honest with you chief, because I wondered the same thing before (and still do)
It's practice, practice, practice
I'm currently 25 and have been drawing since I was about 11. I'm totally self-taught and barely used tutorials before bc I barely understood them, but I only started improving a lot in the last few years and especially this year bc of two main reasons: I started getting out of my comfort zone (God knows I avoided doing hands for the longest time), and like you see in my screenshot above, a friend of mine taught me the value of references
It's true that most people who do tutorials don't know how to teach, and that's why people get lost, yeah. Like Not Solo said tho, how I approach it is that pick and choose what I adore from the tutorials and other people's art, and try to adapt it in my own style.

I might be preaching to the choir, but I hope it helps a lil! art is fun and having a supportive community helps a lot
