i have a little more progress done on this 8-bit reskin thing, its actually an interesting challenge thinking of how i would handle things if i were a developer 20 years ago, trying to consider which tiles could overlap through sprite layers to use two palettes and which ones would be insignificant enough to just share a palette, and seeing which tiles could share colors through a hypothetical third palette if one of the colors that arent shared were cut

it's a father/adopted daughter duo. Simon who's a 30 something pillar of a man, and Annie, his adopted daughter, a 20 something ball of action. they work together as mercs traveling around the world

not any fandom, just a setting for myself
Simon is a Devout Catholic, loving father, stone wall of emotions, voice of reason etc. meanwhile Annie is wild and carefree girl, doing whatever she wants, however she wants, proper delinquent. they love each other as family and would do everything for the other, even if they're absolute polar opposites
the idea is that trough the course of time they become the opposites, Simon devolves into a full force beast without responsability as he chases his wild nature, while Annie becomes a somber and serious woman that tries to pick up the legacy his father left behind
Simon was just as wild as Annie, a full on blood knight who craved only battle, but after adopting his daughter, he turned towards Christianism to reform himself, changing his desires and values as he only wished to take care of his family at that point. enemies that he faces slowly and slowly crack his shell, like a reformed addict being convinced to go back to his addiction. even as he slowly realises that he still craves fighting, he tries to fight this nature
only with time does he finally lose himself and with sorrow abandons his family justifying his actions as "Fighting against evil" when all his subconscious desires is to go back to the fights to the death, the only time he can truly feel alive
Annie on the meanwhile starts as a wild girl, doing whatever she wished however she wanted, however the work as a mercenary requires a certain level of seriousness, and as time goes own, she has to become more focused and subdued, hellish warzones stop her from being as irresponsible as usual. and seeing her father slowly losing in to his unchecked desires forces her to quickly mature. it is when Simon leaves unable to stop his addiction for battle that she loses all pretense of still being the same irresponsible girl she was, joining the air force in need of a job as the military hardens her into a capable and reliable woman, with the wiseness her father once had
they still mantain their core, Simon still loves his family, he still wants only the best for his daughter, Annie still can find time to joke, and she still can smile so that others can smile with her. but their concept changed into the opposite of each other

Annie was adopted not when Simon was a mercenary, but when he was just a punk crashing into crime dens and beating everyone up there for fun, he found her as the sole survivor of a building he accidentally set fire to, feeling guilty for the first time he saved her and took her in
Annie was around 6 when she was adopted making Simon like 18 or 19, the mercenary work is more recent and being taken when she was already of age
Simon continues to go on killing because, well, that's what he's best at, Mercenary work pays really well, and he's not exactly good at much else, Annie goes to join him after he realizes he can't really change her mind and she turned just as good as him

it depends on what you want tips on
panels: don't think about it too hard, because then you'll just suffer into a whirlwind of "how tf do panels even WORK". it's literally just go with what feels right, and remember to thumbnail because that helps you get down how your panels should look/flow
pacing: setting, unless imperative to the scene, like a dungeon aesthetic or opening worldbuilding, should only be one panel to two panels worth of exposure for the reader, then focus onto what's going on in the scene. how fast you want your story to flow after that, is something that you have to decide. also this depends how you're formatting your comic:
is it for webtoon? mobile?
is it for a page-by-page site? like hiveworks?
is it for physical publishing? irl printing?
these three formats each have different formulas, dimensions, etc. for how they should be created. so do some research on this as well.
dialogue: word bubbles should not overtake your page. not even in dialogue-heavy moments. the focus is on the art, with the dialogue being like a backup dancer, of sorts. yes, there are some series that make it work, but it's not always, and it's better to play safe than sorry when first starting out/getting back into your groove. make sure you have ample room for setting up the scene/getting the drama shots in.

for style, i'd say do some reference sheets for the main characters first and foremost in various styles. for a comic, you want what's quick, and easy on you, because 1. you're gonna be drawing it a LOT and 2. if it's going to be posted anywhere for an audience, they're gonna want a schedule, even if it's just once a week updates.
for scale, again, that's like how you should format it, be it for mobile, site, or irl printing
if you're drawing the comic for you and you alone/for funsies, then throw number 2 to the wind btw

I'd suggest there's a glowing, warm orangey light from the windows and lanterns, so you get good warm backlighting, and then cool blue-green lighting in the front. You can get pinkish light from the... that's a return Scepter, right?

@hazy osprey Yes, definitely outline the ears. Compare it to the difference between your skin tone and your skin's outlline
the ears also seem a bit long for fox ears, I would personally make the top edge extend towards center of head more, to make it look more triangular

her name is Eva and she's half praying mantis, half human
she's just a regular girl that works as a security camera operator
and gets beat up a lot because the world just hates her
it's okay, she'll keep pushing through
even if her coworkers ignore her constantly
her city is surmissed in protests against her kind thus making her having to run away for her life once a week
and her childhood was nothing more than hard bullying cause she has big dumb eyes

so I wanted to make her a completely regular person with her own struggles as a faunus as she tries to eek out a living on her own
she's snarky and jokey with her friends but shy and reserved with everyone else, since she's been abused so much she has a hard time opening up to strangers

I lost contact with the guy that drew her sadly
She lives in a house right in front of a swamp and has a close group of friends
And also is traumatized after being persecuted and her house almost burned down
She technically has her own combo weapon like in RWBY but it’s treated as decoration and a keepsake
Two pistols that turn into small scythes
She has no idea how to use em and it was her mom that gave them to her
If anything she only uses one in the pistol mode only to fight intruders and that’s it
Her house is pestered by a lecherous landowner, her friends are either in dangerous lines of work or just not there a lot of the time, she earns minimum wage and is bad at saving money as she wastes it on beer and food
She has abandoned all of her dreams as she just doesn’t believe she’ll ever improve her living situation
At least she stays cheery in the moment
When your life is shit the nice moments in it mean all the more
