hating lineart is why I just started painting instead of drawing. Lately I've been putting 3 seconds into sooooorta "cleaning up" a sketch (just enough so that the major lines are there mostly, but not much effort at all) and just painting under it then coloring the lines to match the painting which is even less effort than just straight out painting, way quicker

The great thing about art is that it's perfectly valid to give a sort of glow (either dark or light) around a character to separate them from the background.

The other trick to painting in a single layer is you should be at the same stage throughout every part of the painting at any given moment. So how some people will color the skin perfectly before moving on to hair? That's not how you'd want to do it in single-layer work

So flats throughout, shades throughout, highlights throughout, etc. Meaning it's easy to fuss around with things at any stage. And if you turn out to hate something you can redo that part and get it to the stage the rest is at.

Do you color over it to "erase it" with a solid color?

Usually, or else with the background colors - depending on where it's at
So if I hate how an eye is coming out I color over it with the skin color and lay down some base shadows and lights depending on where I'm at with the rest of the skin, then start repainting the eye.
But if I hate how an arm is sticking out I'll paint it with the background color. This can leave you with streaks of slightly mismatched colors where the arm was, but that actually can benefit you - mimicking the same effect that sketchy lines do vs "final" lines.

Like I used to keep bad anatomy (entire arms, fingers, eyes, all of it) just because it seemed drawn well even if it didn't make sense for the pose/character/whatever. Getting used to just painting over in single layer work has helped me get over that
Like yeah, that might be a great hand, but if it doesn't make sense for the arm's angle or I decide the character needs to be holding something I shouldn't keep it just because it's great. It needs to make sense.

I just remembered something really random
Was just thinking I should doodle more Sven today (I finished the lil one yesterday if you didn't see) and he's based on my first game file that got corrupted somehow
I headcannon he's got a black thumb, as in he's just not great with plants (but he sure does try!) and I just remembered that on my first game I got a mushroom tree really early on and they multiplied like freaking crazy, so much so that I had tons of mushrooms frequently. I didn't realize they were somewhat rare.

I think he's mostly quiet but kinda comes off as an aloof, lowkey awkward antisocial introvert. Would kinda go deer in the headlights if someone started talking to him and being friendly
Then probably ask like "Why are you talking to me?" So he doesn't mean to come across as rude, he genuinely doesn't get why someone would try to be friendly with him, but that's how it comes across to most people.
