I started the setting on this story waaaaaaaaay long ago, but, like

I wasn't working on it all formally or anything

And recently (shortly before the story???) I made some pretty big changes to it.

Which actually impacted this story a LOT

I've done the same

A lot of my changes focused on making the conflict more morally gray

It was super black and white before which is pretty lame

For me, it was adding a meta reason for white skin

which I had to adjust to the story in the setting

which in turn led to some pretty nasty racism

and more story

and then impacted the whole story I'm writing

which wasn't supposed to have half the things it does now

Basically, it kinda went like this

Elementals (the human-ish-looking ones, anyways), all have very pale white skin.

I wanted a lore reason for that.

So I made it so that, like, white skin = no color, ergo more transparent, and in-lore that means a lesser connection to the physical, and more of a connection with the magical.

Which links to their extra magic ability

but

I already had humans that also had white skin

so that kind of had to apply to them too

But then why don't they rule society if they have more magic?

Then it had to be that there was a drawback

I made it so that this extra magic connection is unstable, which leads to a greater propensity to magical (and deadly) accidents.

And it ended up requiring that, because of this propensity to "explode", they're very discriminated-against

A lot of my story is based in the fact that two nations took some divine teachings way too far and became extremist caricatures of what they should've become

One nation follows the teaching of the original goddess, that mankind should be free of laws and rules and only restricted by his own will

On the bit about gameplay and story integration on #creative. The ludonarrative dissonance is a common complaint for RPGs and shooters, but I think it's become more of a cliche to criticize than a real problem. That critic is still thrown around everywhere, but it's not that big of a problem if you realize you're developing a game and not a story with interactive parts of gameplay. Sure, if your game is all about peace and you just go spreading violence, that might be a problem.
