Apartments too
Kansas ranch = space, new York not so much
New York has plenty of room if you're filthy rich.
we have a top load washer and a front load dryer side by side but it's in a tiny cramped pantry
looking through american homes on zillow is fun sometimes
looking at them when using to the dutch house market feels surreal
what do you mean your house doesn't share even a single wall with a neighbor
are you rich
I have a chest freezer, and I do fill it with lots of meats
I shop for my meat about once a month, and just buy whole roasts and such and carve out my own pieces
My freezer right now is about 50% fish, and 50% vegetables.
I shop more frequently for everything else, like fresh produce
European ๐
having a grocery store within a 5 to 10min walk is a dream and something I sorely miss after my time in Wales
my freezer is loafs of bread and a bunch of glass "tupperware" with leftovers
Our chest freezer is used for the same, a lot of meat, and a lot of ore prepped veg, great to toss in a stew
Is shops everywhere not a normal concept?
everywhere as long as you can drive
it's illegal in much of the US
Ohh ofc US is car centric
I used to have a walking distance grocery store, once upon a time
or live somewhere with good public transport (good luck)
well, it's not illegal to have a grocery store within 10 minutes. More so that zoning laws prevent it from being possible unless you get luckcy
Zoning laws stop you from having a corner shop in a residential area? Wtf?
yeah
Wow that's messed up
if there was a shop then it would no longer be a residential area
many common zoning types don't even allow anything except standalone family homes
US zoning laws are weird
There are places that have more relaxed zoning laws, and the consequences are pretty apparent
it's not like most of the rest of the world where only industry is fully separated from residential
Like have noise or pollution right next to homes
One day
I remember that being a thing when I lived in Texas
the US is like perfectly fine-tuned to both waste as much space as they can and make everything you need as far away as possible
the one corner store in my entire town is farther away than a (closed) steel mill
the power of car-first planning
You say that but there was a factory, and is an industrial district 3 steps away from a residential area near me XD
ok I mean I grew up directly next to a water purification plant
so maybe I'm wrong about industry being separated
can't walk to the grocery store but I can walk to the cement manufacturing plant I can see from my front yard
lmao
I have at least 5 grocery stores within a 15 minutes walk
I do kinda cheat cause I can walk into the city center within 15 minutes
there's no "can't" in "hostile architecture" ๐
Technically i can bike to the grocery store
technically anyone can
i can't, I don't own a bike
Technically I can fly to the grocery store, I just need a trebuchet
what counts as a grocery store
if I tried to bike here I think I'd get run over by a golf cart
I can get to the corner shop in 15 minutes
A shop that sells grocery's
which has most groceries I guess
I class them as counting
if it sells stuff beyond what you'd find at a gas station/convenience store I'm count it
what would that be
(I can bike to the actual grocery store....it is a 4 mile bike ride but that isnt bad)
But also
a fresh produce section... a meats section
I dream of a world where I produce all my own produce
I can get to 2 supermarkets in a 15 min walk, bump that up to 30 mins though and I can get to 6
uh, I guess technically it has both of those, they just aren't super appealing
Then there's SO MANY corner shops
the raw distance to a real store isn't bad here, but the road design is, so it was a literal hour by bike last time I tried
I also dream that dream for you, home grown veg is so good!
(also my balance isn't great, so it'd have to be a small trip etc)
idk if I'll ever have a backyard in my life let alone a farm
there's small farming plots you can rent in my city though idk what they cost
I grew up with a large backyard. I'd like to have one again someday.
Just fill your house with pots and troughs
I have a yard, but options are pretty limited as far as what I'd be able to do with it
my dad at one point built a greenhouse on our tiny balcony with an automatic watering system for his cacti and succulents
www fancy! Love a good automated system
it's long gone now
Check out handsonkatie for some neat automated/DIY home systems. Her content is a bit gratuitous, but actually pretty interesting.
She has a smart garden, among other things
all I get out of whatching american DIY things is that y'all seemingly don't need specialty drills to get into the walls
which I'm kinda jealous of
Same! Masonry bits are a pain and so loud
sometimes you barely need a drill at all
Well lucky for you HandsOnKatie is not American
my mom has like 1 neighbor with a drill that we all borrow to drill into the walls
we've got our own drill but it's like petting the wall
My biggest DIY brainfart is trying to find the studs in my walls.
With a stud finder.
...somehow this town has no rules about what to use a back yard for
they ticket people constantly for weeds/etc so I'd assumed otherwise
"oh that was reinforced concrete rebar not a stud"
More... "oh yeah, every internal wall is brick"...
very nice
Having easy to find mounting points every 16" apart is nice
Studs? The only stud it'll find is one of the horses in the field next door
But if you don't have studs, how do you make the dad joke?
It's even easier to find a mounting point anywhere BC it's brick
Well, wire/pipe detectors are often also stud finders.
So you can still make the joke!
With the horses in the field next door
Or rather, our mounting points are mostly reversible with a bit of patching, but I imagine drilling into bricks is a bit more work to undo
It's... less great for that, yeah.
Nahh just shove some spackle in it and call it a day
Like you can fill them, but it's literally never going to be exactly as strong if you need to drill close to it.
Oh ye there's no chance of getting it as strong again
Plsu side though is mount points are literally everywhere in the walls.
I've remounted my TV 3 times just to have it in a slightly different place and to try it out on the other wall
I don't own a drill
If only u can just pick that up with a click
my tv just sits on a tv stand
First was in the most obvious place, but after realizing there was a glare, I switch it to the otherwall
Replace it with a picture frame, and no one will notice
"huh didn't know your tv was plugged in"
it isn't actually
I'm using the socket I used for the tv for a little water fountain for cats from when they visited me a few months ago
Meanwhile me one day: https://www.screwfix.com/p/erbauer-straight-shank-masonry-drill-bit-20mm-x-400mm/255ph
It was at that point I was glad I massively over-bought on drill.
12 quid is pretty decent for a bit like that
Yeah, I was really surprised.
I mean my grandma had a funky little slideshow picture frame thing on a little table in her living room
I guess that was electronic
yeah, they've made digital image frames for a while
not ubiquitous for obvious reasons, but I think my parents have one
I got one as a gift at some point and it immediately stopped working, I haven't bought another and I likely ever will, plus I don't like needing to change battries
If it was colour e ink I would consider it
I've been in the market for a good digital photo frame, and Smart Home Solver did a video recently comparing the best options, but all of them aren't quite what I'm looking for yet
(oh right, I should get an actual e-ink reader someday
)
I bought a color e-ink reader but it had horrendous rainbow dithering on black and white content like manga panels so I returned it
Ideally whichever solution I use would not be dependent on anything cloud and it would use a color e-ink display but actually look good
I think most options only let you pick 2 of those 3
The revolution on ceinks are pretty good, they're still quite washed out still though which is a shame
Raspberry Pi + colour e-ink display + a custom solution would probably be my goto for something like that, honestly.
Like that is something you could easily enough roll your own for.
use some off the shelf slideshow program...
I'd also like a good enough e-ink reader to faithfully represent manga/graphic novels
Honestly even an Rpi is overkill, the off brand ones are much cheaper and pretty much identical for such low resource applications like that
eink took me a while to get used to, what do you mean image maintenance takes no battery use
apparently the rainbow effect on light grays is an inherent flaw of color eink that the rendering engine is supposed to correct for
that boox thing did not however
Oh my eink reader was also boox! It was very very washed out
I've seen some pretty good color eink but only if you wanna spend your life savings on it
I'm guessing it's a result of light greys being rendered as rgb components or something?
Oh wait no it wasn't boox my mistake, it was nook, I just found it
I forgot the details tbh but it's caused by it achieving gray with a dithering effect but because there's 3 pigments physically separated it needs to be really smart with what pigment it uses where when dithering
I've been tempted to get it recently after learning it still pays the creators if you have it, and apparently recent changes mean that adblocking doesn't count as a view (and so doesn't count towards algorithm stuff)
(also does anybody else remember back when the YT app icon was a TV?)
I do remember that
That was an iPhone exclusive I believe
I had youtube premium for quite a while cause I also used youtube music
I still miss Google Play Music
It has never been a TV on anything I've owned, which was around the time it was a TV on iPhone and apple devices
Wait that's gone? Bugger I have some music on there!
I used to hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" all the time, nothing is quite like it
honestly having gone back to spotify now I really miss youtube music's recommendation algorithm
spotify is just not good at it idk
Google Play Music was replaced by YouTube Music a long time ago

(still backreading)
Installed the app and couldn't find the You tab, but did find the link to do it on desktop (https://www.youtube.com/recap).
incredible
I've still got nothin there smh
I actually tried practically ever remotely feasible alternative to spotify/youtube music
I don't know where to find the Discord one, although I can't imagine what it would even show for me
It'll probably say I spend most of my time here
unfortunately it's not a great landscape out there when you primarily listen to japanese music
spotify or youtube music is all u got
or apple music i suppose maybe idk
i would simply acquire mp3s from mysterious places
I tried like deezer and qobuz and tidal
(honestly all my new music is game OSTs lately)
I used to use Deezer, but then I found about a way to get mp3s directly, then it became a pain to download music, so I went back to Spotify given I wasn't paying for it
the mp3 route just doesn't work for me because I practically never listen to playlists I made. I pretty much solely use the artist radio's or genre compilations
I shove everything into a single playlist and put it on shuffle, it's a fun game
My source of music is just YouTube mixes with sponsorblock on top to make it more smooth
youtube music knowing my youtube history gives me fun things like suddenly autoplaying Pumpkin Cowboy by bdg
These days is mostly vtuber music, but occasionally covers of videogame music like from familyjules sneaks in still
Good taste
Same
this year my "actually focusing on work" playlist is just these on shuffle
A lot of the stuff I listen to do be the things vtubers like to cover
(gangsters is a very old game with like 5 songs on disc, but i like them)
My youtube recap isn't interesting, nobody would care to see it. Totally not posting because the top channel is ||a reaction youtuber (IN MY DEFENSE his seem much more high effort than most I've seen, isn't just simply laughing at particular parts, for example. and its edited down so much that most of each episode isn't even in the video, just some specific moments from the episode(s))||
Second top channel is YouTuber Who Tortures Games (Let's Game It Out), and third is Ethoslab
(Also ||I'm only watching videos on stuff I've already watched myself, because I just don't care otherwise ๐ || )
( || So I've really only watched his owl house series, and his ongoing she-ra (netflix version) series|| )
just a list of 5 vtubers
oh hey, amalee's the only one of those I've watched stream
since I follow a friend of hers with like 0.1% of the viewer base
I have a vtuber on there
all my vtuber knowledge is tangential, mostly via manga authors gushing about them
I always play on autogenerated playlists to the point that I have no idea what the fuck ใทใฃใซใซ is
and it's my second most listened to song
somehow sharuru means charles, googling it
Yeah this seems accurate. (KAR isn't higher because its so new ๐ )
a whole 13 times in the entire year
I basically listened to it once a month and that makes it my tied most listened to song of the year
of my 5 top songs 3 is video game ost and 2 is from niche/underground vocaloid producers
it would have been a 2/3 split but one of them suddenly delisted their albums for whatever reason
This kinda tracks too:
- peak depression, need something to be slightly happy
- starting to feel slightly better but not enough to actually do things
- I now feel like doing things
(more details on "focused on gaming")
youtube still does not deem me worthy of a recap
Maybe because you've got those boring EU regulations in the way?

like I need help, does this link show anything for any of y'all
https://open.spotify.com/album/0uTi3kRsxH7LQfOGIE3Aj1
Yes
wait does it show any songs
Though the titles are greyed out, not sure if that's normal
(I never use spotify)
it loads the playlist yeah but they're all disabled
ah yeah then it's all gone
same, yeah

I once did a comparison of what percentage of 80 songs in my liked songs list on spotify were available on all the different music platforms
spotify ironically lost because one of em was delisted
(I'm like 80% sure that Linkus7 is entirely responsible for wind waker being up there)
Minecraft... uh, ethoslab, need I say more?
Spotify - 79 of 80 (one of em has been deleted apparently)
Youtube Music - 80 of 80
Deezer - 70 of 80
Tidal - 65 of 80
Qobuz - 54 of 80
was the result
I find it very amusing that spotify lost despite me using my spotify liked songs for the comparison
I genuinely dont know how minecraft got on that list
the rest make perfect sense (though surprised tos2 was that low)
amogus
One of my top games is a mobile app, so it reveals me as the casual gamer that I am
I too have Theo listed as one of my top channels, although I mostly have his rants on in the background
Iโm so casual that it only lists 4 games for me
this is cute but not green and therefore useless
They really should've made that one color customizable
It's origami! Just use a different color of paper!
Also I'm suddenly noticing that those "pixels" for the circle have multiple colors per pixel in some spots
I feel you can trace the progress of my depression this way
Same for mine like I mentioned earlier
How do you guys get that
Mine was sorta upwards not downwards though
Apparently the app can do it? But I downloaded the app and couldn't find it, and ended up finding the browser version: https://www.youtube.com/recap
Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
me neither
I can tell you what I watched
A lot of stupid shit
Shorts of cats
People knitting
Programming lectures above my head
Aviation
Tax law
Apparently not on app for meeeeeee
Smh
No terminal wrapped for atra
No spotify
No YouTube
This is all I'm worth
you must be fluent
interesting that 50 hours is a top 2% learner
that's not a whole lot for learning a language
does duolingo make you review stuff? I swear I spend more than 50 hours just on flashcard reviews alone within a month for japanese
kinda. In one way they make you repeat the exact same thing ad nauseum over and over at first but eventually things just disappear
it doesn't do spaced repetition
I will warn you guys that not all duolingo languages are of equal quality
back when I tried my first language out of curiosity I was shocked at how bad it was, it turns out they allow community submitted content
I am of the stronger opinion that all of them are bad nowadays with them having removed grammar explanations and the comment sections
my first language was just straight up wrong or weird half the time
some of them are worse than others
dutch was like... correct but you'd sound like a weirdo

Did I mishear that some of them are AI based now, too?
I'd imagine it'd even be difficult to use as a very extra supplement if a lot of it is just weird
I heard that too a while back but I never looked into it
I mean they introduced an LLM chat agent into duolingo practically the month chatgpt launched
so probably
for japanese idk why you'd ever use duolingo when bunpro exists
my bigger concern is that if you're learning you can't tell what is and isn't weird, though if you're learning and want to speak naturally the best possible thing to do is get as wide a variety of sources as possible anyway
yeah for sure. I did spanish and japanese on there 8+ years ago just to see what was up and the few bits I recall from the japanese side make me cringe into my soul, but I didn't know any better
people seem to get so stuck on duolingo that they never expand beyond it - the effort they put into the app they could equally spend on a proper resource and get much further
At least duolingo teaches you the important sentences like "My grandmother stole my spoon"
but of course the gamification makes it appealing
yeah though there's a lot gamified language learning tools
they're usually just not as over the top about it
i remember using the JP duolingo and going "this isn't.. teaching me anything - it's skipping a lot of steps.."
bunpro has levels and a streak and achievements and a bunch of statistics but it's not blasting you with colorful animations and the obnoxious fuckin duolingo "correct" sound that haunts me when I sit in the train and I hear it coming from somewhere
would sites like wanikani classify as gamified? with streaks and all that
to a degree yeah though not a lot
it's more gamified than like... an anki deck
speaking of. I have not touched japanese or any reviews in months
The grandmothers do indeed be stealing spoons
I think I inherited my current spoons from my grandma actually
I heard about a language learning game that came up with their own typing method somehow? So that you could do it quickly in a faster paced game
I use marumori over bunpro & wanikani these days for japanese and I feel like it's the only thing that's kept me doing my reviews
If I had stuck with the others I'd have burnt out a very long time ago
I switched to sentence mining quite a while ago
I'd imagine at your level crumb that you'd be pretty okay with consuming native content to keep up with things?
I am interested in learning another language, but I would definitely need something game based
it sucks to do but I can manage
Not simply gamified, but like an actual game that's fun to play
(The one I saw with the custom typing was more "actual game" than simply gamified)
tbh if you've been keeping it up all this time I'd imagine you're ahead of me
yeah, it's so weirdly different from either the effective ESL classes I had before moving to the UK or what actually learning English was like
the only reason I could even use itis that I have taken some high school japanese. c.c
Duolingo infamously laid off a chunk of their staff to replace them with AI specifically
I used rosetta stone for a while in high school. <flashbacks to it refusing to recognize my pronunciation of sandwich>
I took a couple year "break" and only got back to new content at the start of this year, so I'm only nearing the end of N3 grammar and am doing a diploma in japanese as well to get speaking practice in
vocab wise I'm all over the place but have a good chunk of n2 & n1 knowledge
yeah you're ahead
Ooh, you're getting a degree in japanese?
Look, I actually took three semesters of French
I've heavily neglected reading and listening so those are considerably more behind which is why I consider myself to be only intermediate
I finished n3 though
The CEO took heat for posting this memo around the same time time they were doing mass layoffs
Just a diploma, it's done alongside my actual degree (paramedicine) part time, so it's only half of the units a degree would have
but I'm only doing the advanced units and the ones where they make you consume a huge amount of native content and write assignments on
"headcount will only be given if a team cannot automate more of their work" don't you just love when non devs make great decisions about how dev work should be handled
The company I work for has the same policy
My team was cut in half this year, with the expectation that we could still do all the same amount of work thanks to ChatGPT
spoiler: nope
the company I work for has actually doubled in employee count within the last 2 years I think
This reads like a joke someone would make to scare people 10 years ago
so unbelievably shitty
it's laughable when they say they need more content and that manually doing it doesn't scale when very small teams have been outdoing them by an order of magnitude
duolingo doesn't care about giving you a lot of material
they'll give you 5 new words and then make you repeat them a billion times
and half of their input methods basically solve themselves even if you forgot what the word meant
hell one of them is about constructing a sentence in your native language with all the words already given to you
duolingo is very intentional in wanting you not to actually learn the language, they want you to keep showing up
Sounds like it's built on the same principles as social media. Optimized to trick your brain into releasing dopamine without a definitive end. So basically, doomscrolling.
essentially
you don't become the largest language learning platform by being the best way to learn a language
you become the largest by being the most accessible and engaging platform
Teach me Chinese crumble
I don't know Chinese
(Jk, I'm using trainchinese for that.)
๐
It's pretty good tbh
I wonder
How much time i spent this year
Listening to the kpop demon hunters soundtrack
have you tried hanzizero or pandanese before? I hear about them a lot as being similar to the good japanese resources
I keep telling myself that I'll pick up mandarin again but so far haven't been successful
so little time...
weren't you also doing Korean

I have 0 actual use for korean so it's ok
The thing i like aboit trainchinese is that you have to write
tbh 6 months is longer than almost all my language learning phases
I'm actually pretty fluent spoken/listening
oh ur cheating
I'm just awful at written
well that makes sense
I mean I should've guessed considering you were just in China I think
writing characters is a whole other experience
reading is the only thing I can just vaguely do just from guessing from characters shared between Japanese and Chinese
it'd be messed up and wrong
but it's still the thing I'd get closest to achieving rn
Like, I survived fine in beijing
Although there was some guessing, and I totally did NOT know what I ordered for food sometimes lol
many moons ago in early uni I rushed through like 1800 kanji with the heisig method in a few weeks and then promptly forgot like 95% of em
(My dad did laugh at me because I mixed up two different characters for different veggies once lol.)
smh amateur
I'd just hope ่ is somewhere in there so I can at least kinda pray it is a vegetable
I thought that was emoji
It helps that I can speak/listen so.
And hovered/clicked trying to figure out what emoji
It looked like a fluffy skull
๐ โ ๏ธ
่ is the character for vegetable
Just fyi crumble
in Japanese
China is introvert paradise
yeah in japanese
lord knows what that is in Chinese if anything
Where else can you go to a restaurant and order off your phone lol
Also veggie in chinese
Cai
That's every restaurant in China lol
qr code ordering is becoming super popular here too
๐
I wish places would offer both options rather than only qr menus
you don't always want to use your phone when you're going out
nice (and sai is one of its common readings)
๐
tbh ordering from menus in languages you don't understand is just an average part of the European tourist experience
I fucked up badly once in France as a teenager and got some sausage filled with organ meats
absolutely vile
I may come from a country where leverworst (liver sausage) is popular and common but that thing in France was inedible
darn, crumble's not a true houte cuisinierรฉ
I'm not sure a little restaurant in a tiny rural village of like 200 people is serving haute cuisine
it'd be weird if it was, lol
I once interviewed for a startup working on stuff like that
Seeing as I've never seen it since, I'm guessing it didn't take off
...okay I guess I did the phone qr code thing once at an airport?
But this startup was more focused on tablets built in to the tables
You know what one of the fun parts about steam frame coming out?
Chances are, my steam point total will go over 1 million
I've got 410k right now
You get points for each dollar you spend on steam, and you spend it on cosmetics
hmm let me check my balance
When they introduced it they seemed to have backcalculated how much you got too
350k
It's slightly annoying how there's never been any new steam deck keyboards though
I'm using Spectrum, but I wish some new ones would come out. Always had the same 8 available since launch, no new ones
I have no idea how I'd even begin to use up my steam points
give them to someone else with a 2/3 tax rate
How many do you have? Given that things cost thousands in the store, I'm guessing you could just try to collect them all ๐
...when did I get an award. and from who
"who" is probably a mystery, the forum ones are anonymous at least
...wait, can I give myself an award?
dang there's no cat award
Guess I'll go with Mad Scientist (to go with the code crimes)
๐
Really wanted to do this
Okay but another page says this. When have I ever posted anything, period?
built different
a great way to 'farm' it, is that when an award is put on a workshop item, all the contributors get it
Ah, but you see: I never post anything on steam ๐
Literally have only done that to share for MP (Stellaris tweaks for MP with brothers, terraria modpack for friends)
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2411152014 I did nothing except coordinate some of the other contributors at the very beginning and didn't do a line of code for development but got contribution credit anyway
and all the awards but one on my account I think are from it
Does steam do a year in review
Yes, thought I think a bit later
Mines probably pretty lackluster given I've hardly played anything on steam in like a year
cant wait to see that ive launched Stardew 1,000 times this year again
There is a nontrivial chance I haven't launched steam at all this year
I want to see iros
what is the thing to see here
a yearly review I think?
not a great sign that it opened up to this
it's refusing to give me a 2025 one
What about poker game
non steam
What about aseprite
built from source
I bought the steam one
And run the AUR one
The steam version is just inconvenient for a lot of reasons
Well I finally got the discord recap thing, I expected Button to be the most talked to BC I think they're the only person I have DM'd XD thanks to the c0mmiss1on (ignore the replacement of letter with numbers I CBA dealing with more random DM requests)
Also that auto genned message is really cringey to me wow
pfft it sounds like a shitty valentines card
It really does XD
I am slightly sad I turned off spy on me please discord
Given it does still record stats k wonder if you turn the setting(s) off would it show you?
It gives a "checkpoint unavailable due to privacy settings" screen if you have the setting off
Ahh that's a shame
Wondering if I should hold off reselling my old 500gb DDR4 RAM bc of the shortage ๐
I'll take it ty
You're sitting on a goldmine...
that's like a million dollars
500gb
500gb total?
1000 512 MB sticks
gb, not gB, that would be about 100 512MB sticks
if were being pedantic wouldn't it be 100 512MiB sticks?
Me too
They explicitly say turning the setting off doesn't make it available in the FAQ.
Which is weird, since it seems like a lot of the stats are available when friends look at their checkpoint
Thats what I was thinking, the data is already being collected
And also I don't think I was imagining having never turned it off - I saw a bunch of people on discord with long time accounts that say they never turned it off
One of the reddit moderators on the discord seems to be working overtime to defend how discord handled the checkpoint and setting stuff
I saw a bunch of stuff of them saying if the setting is disabled they don't get the data, but not always:
(Also I tried poking around in the browser version with the console, but that made firefox struggle to even breath)
hmmmm I wonder why they'd tell people that they can't see the engagement bait feature if they don't allow data collection...
I'm not upset (overstatement) about it being inaccessible with the setting.
I'm upset (again, overstatement) that there's a 95% chance they have that data anyways (at least since I'm in the land of FREEDOM of getting exploited), but changing the setting can't make it available
"but calculating it would cost money"
...I literally pay for nitro, and not the cheapest tier
you could request your data and manually make it
good luck parsing the likely 10gb of data you get though
better get writing JS or OpenGL in that case XD
But also brb trying on an account I made this year to isolate my means of distractions but never ended up using
It's no on this server
out of sheer curiousty
I did say "isolate my means of distractions"
damn
Hi!
Oh hi Casey's alt account XD
This is not Casey's alr account

Here I was thinking some Congo governmental thoughts were going to be expressed

I think it's funny how this moderator keeps saying they don't have access to the data if the setting is off
wait where my border gone, how dare they remove it
Like uh... do you really think they implemented a lock on using said data at all without the personalized ads setting?
I've also heard the data is super off, though
I don't really enjoy these year end review stuff it tells me I don't touch grass
But then you could boast about how much less grass you touch than your peers
They must never know
Oh well, I'll just have to live with my steam recap
(When it comes out)
(Though it'l lbe pretty lackluster this year comparatively)
Ah, I see the HL3 conspiracy theorists are alive and well
my steam recap is going to be very inaccurate because it doesn't log my true goty ||Plants vs. Zombies DLC Edition Mod||
Youtube, I'm not going to watch the 'how expensive is watching all of pokemon legally' video!

Where js my touch grass year in review
Also
If i sound less coherent than usual I'm running s fever
Touch Grass Year In Review:
- You touched: 3 species of grass this year!
- Top species touched: Poa pratensis
- Number of native grass species touched: 0
- Conclusion: Curse You American Lawn Monocultures!
Does grass touched through gloves/shoes count, or do I need to use exposed hands/feet
clothes are basically human fur, they count

I am building a NAS wooo
Or well
I will, once the stupid stuff I ordered for it arrives
shakes fist at PostNL
Woo!!! A Nas! I should probably do that same, I've got the bits but they aren't the most power efficient
A nas.....so like
Shoving all your important documents in Dropbox is the same right?
of course yes
I just buy new ssd every year instead of nas
Half of my important files r on some kinda git host anyways
My NAS is reaching critical levels of full. I really need to expand it.
i havent used my nas in a while because mounting it on linux is great fun
it also not being turned on doesn't help i suppose
my "NAS" is just a debian server with zfs
Being a NAS is one of the least useful things I have my home server doing lol
how much...

I love going back to a project I last touched a month or two ago, where I had stopped half way through and it doesn't even compile yet, and the commit message is basically just "probably is only half working at the moment, if it even compiles"
And then it turns out it works perfectly.
Well
Except it doesn't compile
Like I had changed an interface but not the implementations
And I can't recall why I was making those changes
If it were me... I just got distracted by a shiny thing.
I think I had meant to continue the next day but never did
Because the commit message also says "more stuff I never committed from weeks ago"
And it certainly doesn't help that it seems like two things were in progress at once
Both things were related to make the same thing work how I wanted it seems, but still
thats almost every project I have, after a while theres zero chance of continuing bc I forget to document and comment my code as I'm writing it
I'm so glad I updated. (/s) (The October 2025 part basically says copilot + stability/security fixes)
the update for that one actually broke my install and I had to uninstall and retry
all for those wonderful features
Crumble are you a neovim
open two instances so you can be the backbone of life
๐งฌ
Why helix over neovim
cause I don't have to spend time configuring it
I think the breaking point was when the plugin people null-ls which was used regularly for a bunch of LSP functionality got archived and people had to figure out what to switch to
what I'd need a handful of plugins for in neovim is just already there
understandable
Honnรชtement
also it wasn't my reasoning at the time but now that I've gotten used to it I do think helix's way of the movements/editing is actually nicer once you're used to it
If you want to be another document, a more seasonal idea would be santa's nice and/or naughty list
barring the one exception that annoys me which is that neovim surround queries understand "tags" as something text object so you are able to "delete everything in between these html tags". Helix has no such matcher
That's a better idea than what I came up with
Thats a good name, equally terrifing yet still festive
What do you want for Xmas, casey?
KAR3
Rustcon ๐
What do you guys use home servers for
Also, we appear to be getting standing desks at work
One of the new hires just got his
i have a lot of media and media automation and recipes and the occasional game server
I use my server for a local git service for messy projects, docker (for cross compiling), and running bots, nothing too fancy
my pi is currently just a discord musicbot that doesnt work anyway
i no longer have one, but I was going to self-host a cloud
(I mean, I technically have one, but I don't want to run one off a laptop)
mine is mostly just file storage and a media server with jellyfin
though I run most of my stuff on digital ocean vm's because I dont like getting reddit hug of death
I do want to set up a NAS when I hvae a spare thousand and a half thoug
everything I host is only available on my local network or via wireguard
if I were to host something publicly available I'd probably get a vps
though I did host a Minecraft server for quite a while
I dont consume enough media to make a media server make sense
neither do I but I did anyway
๐
don't think I've logged into jellyfin in months
Same here, not to mention how big media tends to be, I have thought of it but always decided against it
i have to get another hdd soon-ish for my media bc ive already filled my first one
well almost filled
my lawyer has advised me to refuse the question
anime mostly yeah
If I lived somewhere that didn't have such a stable connection I think I would use it just so I didn't have to deal with buffering, I see how it has it's uses for that
there's castlevania on there too tho...
I think there's maybe even a single thing on there that isn't animation
maybe
If it isn't a docuseries about penguins then it doesn't need to be in there XD
uh I checked, nope it's all animation
not a single real person to be found in my media library
Absolutely penguins documentation
I watched a bit of prehistoric earth on the plane
Also a bit of thr live action how to train your dragon
There's a life action httyd? That's quite cool
literally every animated movies nowadays can't rest for 5 years without getting a live action adaptation
moana is getting one! it "only" came out 10 years ago!
frozen has been spared one but idk how long that lasts
dang I should get around to watching the sequel some day
I hope kpop demon hunters does not get one
my little niece already has elsa/anna shoes
Frozen has had loads of live action adaptations, technically not movies but live shows which I say count
it's kind of interesting how seemingly nothing has managed to really replaced frozen since its release
little girls now still are just obsessed with frozen
12 years later
Frozen was phenomenal in that regard
Moana has mostly just been a nice addition but it pales in comparison
and nothing Disney has done in recent years seems to achieve really any notable interest
encanto was the last one I think that anyone has really cared about
it took them 10 years to make a sequel but zootopia is getting there
currently no 1 biggest opening for any animated movie ever
seems to be
my immediate assumption with Disney sequels is that it'll be bad
that's been the case since the VCR era
huh maybe I'll give it a watch
they stopped doing lower quality direct to dvd sequels some time ago
well except for moana 2 which was a cancelled tv series frankensteined into a theatrical movie (it is noticeably worse than the 1st one)
my niece is too young for this stuff so my exposure from that side rn is more like... Bluey, Muppet Babies
I've heard...
otherwise every sequel so far is at worst not as groundbreaking as the original
hmmm
Atlas dk you watch animalogic
You too????
Why is everyone on my case about making an actual list ๐
(everyone = just my family so far)
What do you want for Christmas, Casey?
I got casey a half baked programming language for Christmas, top that /s
you're telling me a half baked this programming language?
I didn't know halflings could program
...or use a computer, for that matter, considering they don't exist in their universe
Reader, you will know you made it when someone else picks up and washes your dirty handkerchiefs for you when you are sick.
Reader, I have not made it, and past atra definitely hid the remaining handkerchiefs somewhere I'm sure of it
I would get out of bed to search but somehow all my back hurts
Google AI Overview seems to think "code comment directives goland" is french and is spouting something that I don't understand XD
to be fair, 3 out of those 4 words are french
so given goland is a proper noun you did in fact make a french query
good to know XD I only knew of comment and directives as having a french origin but I thought french didn't have a "v" I'm not too sure why for some weird reason, I know for a fact it does XD
did abba teach us nothing about french
in hindsight that was a very abstract comment
for a long while I thought all abba songs were in swedish, I was a child so that atleast forgives some ignorance XD
i may not speak swedish, but voulez vous is at least french, and it does have a v in it ๐โโ๏ธ
omg I can do the funny governor thing I forgot
This funny governor thing
is it specifically made for Casey or is it general thing with any name?
That was sent manually! By who, though, is a mystery...
(Definitely not me!)
(Actually not me, though.
)
Also wasn't me I wasn't at a computer related device
Ahhh that makes more sense, especially given Caseys name isn't anywhere and atra didn't capitalise it so it seemed very weird for it to have that XD
Bahaha no hidden message for you XD
Should've sent it from the hidden lands
lmao
version=$(pwsh -Command "([xml](Get-Content build/common.targets)).Project.PropertyGroup.Version")
This feels like a crime. But it works, and is leagues more reliable than a grep and a sed.
It's the bot maintenance role in this case!
Is this for GitHub actions?
Yup!
I used jq to extract it from the manifest
Ahh I did look at the bot code but couldn't find the role or username/ID requirement
Ah, right, this is for SMAPI though, so it's all XML.
๐
I'm just going through the final cleanup, and I really didn't like that grep/sed line if I could avoid it.
But thatโs powrshell, so wouldnโt it not build on not-windows?
Or do you have an if
Oh, no, Powershell's also on Linux.
And installed by default on the Ubuntu runners on GitHub.
(That = your code snippet earlier)
Huh
powershell is also available on macOS too, the cross platform powershell was forked from Microsofts Powershell that did only run on windows
there's something cursed about powershell on anything except windows
powershell should exclusively be used in a very ugly blue terminal window
That blue feels... more tame than it is nowadays?
Yeah, the same
I actually have the windows terminal set to the gruvbox theme at work
Pathos is my suspect
does anyone have an easy way of remembering if it's padding or margin on the inside of a container (CSS)? instead of googling it which I always seem to have to do
the padding is inside the room -> padding is inside the container
Thats actually an increadibly easy way to remember, thank you XD
also where I should be put after trying to do anything in js
js is great, I would say lua is more my padded room language, especially with tables
Oh Discord, never change, please do change your app is terrible
Did you hear about how they're going to "fix" the memory leaks by just making discord restart itself if it's using more than 4gb
what...
That does fix the leak yes
that's easily the worst idea they could have just make it 32 bit at that point, bring back support for old systems
Well. It's electron, so their ability to do that is controlled entirely by their platform
I'll never understand why electron caught on, it's so terrible
probably because it's easy, cross platform and uses web dev stuff which is quite a bit easier to write
Html and css are wonderful to work with, but the tradeoff is having to write your actual code in fucking Javascript, and having to run it on a separate standalone whole-ass web browser
It may be a bad time to mention I was making an electron program XD I have switched now to Wails thanks to Pillow letting me know about it
There's other options for xplat gui. Qt and gtk have been around for years, and now we also have things like avalonia and slint
I've never heard of that, I'll have to check it out
It uses HTML CSS and JS like standard, but it also uses Go (and can compile down to a single executable which is just ideal for my purposes)
Heres the link to the site https://wails.io/
Build beautiful cross-platform applications using Go
Is it really much better than Electron? Looks like it still uses an entire Webkit renderer?
It uses the os-provided one, it sounds like
it seems to use a lot less system resources so far
Like what tauri does
Okay, that's a good step up!
It's still a browser, which I'm not huge on, but at least having it be a shared system resource should prune much of the bloat
I'd never heard of tarui, it does seem quite similar, main difference being Go swapped with Rust
I'm honestly still just a fan of GTK/Qt...
Avalonia is nice for the comfort of C#, though.
Yeah
Nothing stopping you using either of those two with C#, though.
I just wish styling xaml wasn't so awful
I struggled so much with the axaml, it was not a fun time
Qt with its designer is lovely.
It seems like the ideal solution is instead of using an entire browser, separate out the rendering engine and provide direct c apis for manipulating the document so you can use it with things other than js.
Maybe it's too tightly coupled though
Slint was also really nice to work with, what little I did with it. I'm not very good at rust though, which was the main reason I haven't made anything with it yet
also node too, bit of an eclectic mix of language support
tbf this isn't always an upside, since a benefit of electron here is that you know exactly which version of chromium your app is going to run on no matter where it's installed and don't need to worry and browser compatibility issues
the fact that people want to develop for chromium is mind boggling to me
"Yes I would like to make my application dependent on the evil company's evil browser"
it's not dependent on google chrome. it's dependent on chromium, which is not the same thing
chromium is an open source browser engine that Google Chrome (and basically every browser nowadays that isn't Firefox) uses under the hood
Anecdotally my forays into building system electron discord has always ended in weird ass bugs
I think it is kind of succ to have to pack a whole browser with ur app but it is the practical choice when storage not concern
Button! You're purple
... and which is basically under the control of Google, as far as I know... which doesn't seem very different
orwnge
Although it jd hard to br less coherent than. My normal anyways
weird bugs on building or installation is probably more widely preferable to weird bugs due to one person's computer not supporting whatever part of the html or css or js spec was used with no way to know if they will or not
Oh no i just mean trying to get discord to use the shared system electron was worse than letting it use the bundled electron
i mean, it's an open source project. fork it and do your own stuff to it and don't care about Google, if you want
that sounds like what electron is not meant to do in the first place I thought?
Im sure wayland doesn't help tbh but i don't wish to poke at it further
Im sure it works well for some ppl out there https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/discord_arch_electron
The main bug I had is instant crash when joining streams
(either way the point is if you don't "develop for chromium" then you are not developing for any browser except Firefox, not just chrome)
is the discord crashing when a notification daemon isn't available a wayland thing or just a linux thing? I can't remember but it may also be an electron thing
(actually add Safari to that list too. but no one likes developing for safari either)
I think I would rather internet explorer than safari ngl, mostly because I don't have to buy a $500+ device and probably a subscription thats also somewhere above $20+ a month
do you mean Internet explorer or do you mean edge
Netscape
I mean internet explorer, the browser that takes around 4 business days to load a page XD
would internet explorer even still launch on a modern computer
i would much rather develop for safari than Internet explorer
I don't think ie has support past Windows 10 ltsc edition so it's doubtful
me too
I think it would given backwards compat MS has going on
ie11 is missing like 80% of all css features I use and is even far behind on the javascript side
to be fair I didn't say it would work well
I fear the day someone tries to run my work web application on an apple device cause I cannot even test if it works in safari
thankfully I don't think there are any apple devices that are even allowed on our work network so they can't get to the site anyway
I'm dreading this mod manager I'm making not working on macOS, I really hope it does I don't want to debug something though github actions
What tech stack is it using?
What? macOS, the mod manager, or safari?
The mod manager
Wails, like electron but not using electron, its typical web dev files but with Go
end user experience is the same as electron but with less resource usage
why can't dev use clean, nice C++ with Qt...
Cus cmake suxx
I don't think you want the average web dev to have to know how to write C++
I did think of doing it with C++ but crosscompat was a massive limiting factor with it
Escape the world, return to terminal
I mean, the way things are going, one might just wait for windows to end itself
Tbh as a sometimes-macOS-user, Iโd much prefer a native, SwiftUI-based mod manager
I guess SwiftUI itself doesnโt matter; it could be AppKit, donโt care
Just native-looking, without faking it
I'd go for the much more time efficient approach of "macos not supported"
Fair
See I was gonna say something similar but use chest padding as the example
(I remmeber the difference fine, just came up with that example on the spot ๐ )
I've never struggle with that difference thankfully
I honestly very rarely use margin though
mostly cause in the places where it doesn't matter my brain just goes with padding
and a lot of the scenarios where one would use margins I instead have like gap: or something cause of a grid or flexbox
I fear you'd have a heart attack if you saw the code behind this, it is like 3 different styles clashing together in an unholy mess
that's what I'm used to it's ok
I'm used to css written by C# devs who don't even know what a flexbox
Clearly the answer is to write your own XML loader and CSS like for a MonoGame library, like I did for one game project
because who cares about native feel for most apps (itโs me, I care)
Or for maximum cursedness, specifically a QSS-like?
Is QSS the Qt one? I havenโt seen it
qascading style sheets
Quivering Style Sheets (CSS but thereโs a new screen-shake property that you can apply to each element)
technically that's already perfectly possible in css
Smh
screen shake is too advanced for me, I only just learned drop down menus can be done with just HTML and CSS without JS
Smh then you're me trying to do a pop-up in bash
Thank you for popover knowledge, that solves an issue I have yet to get to XD
Dh! What js British food like
Honestly, the majority of it's... well, peasant food. Or at least heavily derived from peasant food.
Which is to say as filling as possible, as nutritious where possible for as cheaply as possible.
and the rest is probably curry
Peasant food and madras, yes.
it's just so nice to be able to do dropdowns and dialog boxes without having to do some janky setup like before where you have some "dialog/dropdown spawner" at the root of the html that you then try to spawn your dialogs/dropdowns through that
thank you popover
I'm going to take note of this popover thing, though...
I just used .menu:hover .dropdown and so far it works great
Sounds practical.
<US nonsense looms menacingly>
I donโt think Iโve seen the popover API
I'm using a date picker component that uses the traditional style with an absolute positioned picker shown at the bottom of the relative input parent.
Then ran into the classic issue where if the parent element that datepicker was wasn't large enough for the picker it'd get cut off by the bounds of the parent
so I wrote my own wrapper for the picker with the popver api
been nice
also the nicety that the popover api comes with the ability to close them by tapping outside or pressing escape
and a js event you can subscribe to for when the popover closes/opens
it's just ๐
Wow, web dev changes a lot once again
this one had been a very long time coming
Itโs a shame Iโll only ever bother with pre-CSS3 looking websites
I still havenโt learned flexbox and such
Why do that when I can just pretend I centered the dub correctly the old way
I use both flex and grid very often
That's all my portfolio site's going to be when I eventually finish it. I just genuinely think they look better!
I've heard they recently finally decided on a name for the whole masonry layout thing (now called grid-lanes) so that only took like 10 years
I dont think ive ever used grid, a lot of the stuff I make tends to be asymetric which grid doesnt work with as well as flex
For my new site that will totally see the light of day one day, I literally paid for a decent classic style theme and customized it a little
to be fair, that's design. Using post CSS3 features just makes things easier to do. They will still look the same as if it's a website from 2008 if you just use it that way
I am fully with you, I was simplicity, not those (mostly)
also same
Honestly, Casey and Aquo's are both really nice examples of what I like.
I mean I build web based software ultimately really. It shouldn't be super fancy it needs to be practical and fast for someone to be using for hours every single day
if I had a personal website it'd be pretty simple
I'm also quite put off by animations on web pages, unless it's showcasing something or a video, animations are not needed
I had an animation on a sidebar opening/closing in a work application but it felt... off so I just removed it
New or old?
I... don't know if I've seen new, actually?
Yeah, I just hate modern design trends ๐
Iโve shown it here when showing draft new docs
Remind me in 30 minutes to get a fresh screenshot after fighting docker to get it running again
ooo not sure if I can count that high but I'll give it my best shot!!! (#6981527) (30m | <t:1765049132>)
Uber you literally counted higher with that reminder ID
honestly it's kind of fun clicking through these bizarre over the top websites no one in their right mind would ever make for an actual practical project
I have done one thing in 3 hours, it was 10 lines, I think thats a sure fire indicator I am done for the night
sorry ur not hired. The crosshairs on your websites aren't perfectly aligned
Speaking of projects, I learned something recently-ish that boggled my mind.
Apparently people are following tutorials to make portfolio projects? Like that's a common thing to do?
What?
I'm not surprised honestly
the whole point is to showcase what you can do without tutorials
I shouldn't be surprised, but it really shocked me.
thats baffling
especially in the indian dev circles they seem to have a whole pipeline of tutorials to prep a portfolio
much like tutorials on how to get a good looking github profile activity wise
Oh geez, memories of the random PRs story from that one academy/university whatever...
I would much prefer a GitHub activity log showing a message using one of those fancy tools
oh yeah a tutorial on how to open PRs an they used a real open source project for the example
that one is wild
they've been dealing with those PRs for years
I kinda feel bad for the people doing them, because they're being told to do this, not knowing how bad it's making them look.
my github activity profile is a clear case of "oh this person does advent of code"
nothing all year
and then suddenly in december
I've still never done that...
what a great time to start
I think SFML suffered from that once
I need to turn off private repo counting since I sync obsidian now.
(Though I had to turn off automatic mode, since the git plugin hates me specifically)
(I literally learned how to use the base ssh proxy settings to force it to use the private keys properly and then connect. Didnโt work)
To be fair Iโm not 100% fond of it.
But I do like it slightly more than the old one, if I vaguely recall
Iโll ping you too when I post it so you can judge me promptly ๐
I can see exactly when I got distracted by a video game on my GitHub
2-4 weeks of nothing
I can visualize my depression from mine.
(Okay to be fair that doesnโt include certain projects which are only local)
I sit here eagerly awaiting
Same, there was a decent gap where the commits were at an all time low XD
Also itโs not super accurate when I donโt commit for like a week and then commit the entire weeks worth of changes all at once
Which isnโt uncommon for personal projects of mine (mainly my mods)
git commit -m "whatever"
git commit -m "Added some features"
A description like that would fall into the top 5% of open source commits I see
CAT.
git commit -am "Bunch of fixes from the past week or two that I never committed. SpaceCore 5.7.84 and Feline Frenzy 89.704.5672."
(A lot of the times I only remember to commit because of pushing new versions out)
Now I'm in the mood to work on the website doc generation, but I owe @ivory shadow some Minecraft code crimes...
My tabs are getting out of hand again. It's deceptive because I have the windows split across several desktops now
A home page that will surely have something on it eventually this time
@devout vault: get a fresh screenshot after fighting docker to get it running again (30m ago)
Jokes on you I already started
"fighting docker" = "pressing the run button and remembering what port it ran on", apparently
(The alternative content pack format will need to be removed, since that's gonna be removed.)
(And of course that index on the left is vastly incomplete, since I had a long way to go with the docs)
I do want to add a little bit more graphically, but unsure what yet
Maybe a less repetitive background
And a small pixel cat walking around the top and/or hanging from the side as you scroll
I kinda want the stars for the background to twinkle, but I don't want it to be distracting, so I'll need to test it
A couple doc page examples (haven't done autogeneration yet, this was back when I was handwriting them.)
Also need syntax highlighting, and probably something better than a bullet list with sub bullets for a lot of things
I still like the idea of a more compact content pack format since I find json is cumbersome to use, but what I did is janky.
