A. if you light the campfire before the fog progresses far enough the fog stops rising, likely because it unloads from the previous area, and will only start again when you progress further into the next area
B. the fog continuously rises past getting the fog rising message at the shore and progressing further into another area after lighting the campfire just causes the fog to immediately progress to that big wall that blocks the previous area you were in
C. the fog is sentient and decides you deserve to die sometimes
