I also have a hard time hearing them (keep putting music on) I usually just look around all the time or I climb so fast they can't catch me, ifthat doesn't work you can always jump up and down on mushrooms, the zombies can't climb them and don't typically use them

It's also good to keep a milk or medicinal root on you to keep you from dying to the zombie bite

The milk keeps the spore damage off just long enough for the ticking to stop, and medicinal root can clear much of the spores before you die
