When I try to host or join a game with my friends I get to where it says "click to start" but when I press anything the text goes away and the screen stays black and if I click one extra time it says that project zomboid is not responding. plz help

It’s always good to provide more information, such as logs, whether you updated recently, if you’re using mods, etc.
Assuming you updated the game and it started running poorly after the update, I’d recommend doing a clean reinstall of the game (Uninstall the game → delete any leftover files in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
And also delete everything except the “saves” folder in:
C:\Users\yournameuser\Zomboid
If the issue only happens in a modded save, it could be a mod conflict, so the best thing is to play without mods or figure out which mod is causing the problem.
If you’re the one hosting the server and the previous steps didn’t work, you might have blocked ports on the server or misconfigured something in it.
In any case, I recommend providing your logs in case a support admin shows up, and if you’re the server host, they may also ask for your console.txt file.
