LUMBERJACK: +0 points
+2 Axe
+1 Maintenance
+1 Strength
Trait: Axe-pert
this profession is extremely good- it's on the cheaper end of professions, given most professions start you with negative points (something i would argue should change, in fact) and gives you the baseline of any good build (a weapon skill + maintenance) on top of a small boost to a universally-useful physical skill. on top of that, it gets a completely unique trait to boost the swing speed of axes, increasing the combat efficacy even further. this is a good profession in terms of giving something valuable, but in comparison to how everything else is balanced, it's far too cheap.
BLACKSMITH -6 points
+4 Metalworking
+1 Short Blunt
+1 Maintenance

at its core, this seems like it would be similarly good to lumberjack- it has that extremely useful weapon skill + maintenance combo, same as lumberjack. however, the smithing buffs it gives you are of... dubious use. yes, you level blacksmithing faster, but the difficult part of blacksmithing isn't raising the skill so much as it is creating a forge and getting the resources you need to start. once you have the resources for a forge, you're likely to already have the books and even if you don't, levelling the skill consumes almost solely wood/charcoal and isn't hard to raise. on top of that, it doesn't give a unique boost to smithing the way that lumberjack does axe-wielding, and the cost is patently absurd in comparison to lumberjack. you can gain almost the full benefit of taking this profession by selecting a different profession, then taking the 'blacksmith knowledge' trait on top of that, only losing two blacksmithing levels (unneeded, two is more than enough to level quickly) and the short blunt level in exchange for a significant number of points, and regaining the opportunity cost of only being able to select one profession
