#Dedicated Server crashed out of nowhere and the players that were online lost their characters

I'm hosting my PZ server in a decent Linux machine with 4 vCPUs(AMD EPYC), 16 GB RAM and 64 GB SSD using headless Ubuntu, server did run for a whole day without issue until the night where with only 2 users inside, server crashed and they both lost their characters, this was the console output after the crash:

#

By the way, almost no one is capable of connecting without selecting Steam Relay option, I wonder why that happens too, they get stuck in downloading map data and the server kicks them

And what game version are you running

I'm using a Google Cloud VM

potent mason
#

did it crash the machine or just the game?

finite granite
#

Just the game

#

I feel like it exceeded my available RAM

potent mason
#

How much RAM did you allocate to the game instance?

finite granite
#

Like it used more than the 14 gigs

finite granite
#

Of 16 GB

# finite granite 14G

drop that to 12gb as absolute max

Linux needs 0.5-2.0gb as an OS to run

and the rest of a server OS needs about 2gb to broker the other functions

#

realistically you should not allocate more than 50% of your available system memory to a single application

finite granite
#

Yeah, I believe that Steam was using 1 GB of RAM and PZ server exceeded the 14 GB limit

#

Since it's the only thing I can't monitor in Google Cloud Panel I believe it must have been that

potent mason
#

try limiting the server to 10gb then

finite granite
#

CPU never reaches over 50% usage

potent mason
#

leaves you 6gb for the OS and other functions

finite granite
#

Now

#

I wonder why my friends lost their characters lol

potent mason

Was only theirs, I connected and I was alive and other friends too, just the 2 friends that were online at the time

#

its in the worldname.ini file

listed as "SaveWorldEveryMinutes"

#

if you have it at a very high time, then the rollback on crash is pretty aggressive

finite granite
#

Every 15 mins

#

I tried using the backup and they were dead too

potent mason
#

odd

finite granite
#

Or well, not dead but game forced them to create new characters

#

I guess the crash damaged the db file

#

Anyways, was good that it crashed the first day lol, if this happened onto a week of gameplay they wouldn't play again XD

Any other recommendations that you have for me? For example, some people only can connect thru Steam Relay

#

I can do it without using Steam Relay but I have extremely good ping to the server(20-30ms)

Server is hosted in Google South Carolina servers, shouldn't be that bad, but Idk lol

#

I wonder if it's the firewall

#

But I have 16261 and 16262 UDP open

potent mason
#

Are you using mods?

#

Mods can exacerbate connection issues sometimes
