#Server abruptly has lag/invisible items/can't quench thirst/etc. 42.13.1 on Ubuntu Virtual Machine

We've done two fresh installs now and after about 3 hours, everything is absolutely golden--then usually something collision related happens (we hit some rabbits) and then things just start acting totally wonky.

Restarting the server does not seem to resolve it.

any tips on what I can do to 'refresh' things? Folks can't drink/or it takes like a full minute to show they have, can't build things--can't see each other/just crazy lag etc.

Those logs look unrelated. Can you share a screenshot of the Show Statistics menu when in game as an admin? You can find it in the Admin menu

#

And can you specify the RAM assignment? What is the total and assigned RAM to the server?

I will do that next time I notice the issue, which seems to be after 1-2 hours of playing with 3-4 people on. We noticed a similar trend on both 42.14.1 and 42.13.1 - we were thinking it was just the newest update being more glitchy so we refreshed on the older one but are having a similar issue. Unsure if the issue is hardware/config/resource related or has to do with bugs with the current version. Obviously if we can do something to improve things, that'd be grand.

The VM has 20GB total assigned to it (this is my computer, 64GB DDR5 / 9800X3D Processor). The Zomboid server itself has 8GB currently assigned to it ( Edited in the Projectzomboid64bit.json file) and at its peak has had 8 players that it handled well for an hour or so, but will usually only have 3-4 peak now. One of them is in New Zealand, the rest are in the lower 48's of the US, and I am hosting it from Alaska, lol.

I play on the server via localhost. I'm unsure if other players desyncing would cause me to have the problems we've been having - unable to build structures, pick up generators/animals, use animal trailers, etc. The issue is only resolved when the player who seems to have caused it/noticed it first logs out then everyone else can resume until they log back in or after the server itself is restarted.

I also have an 8GB assigned Modded (Gregtech, ew lol) Minecraft server running with 2-4 players that's been going for about 4 months, but they are the same people. So generally 3-4 users connecting to the server between the two games including myself from localhost.

unless I'm mistaken and not editing the right location or misformated it. Haven't been sure how to monitor the services usage of resources either since I'm not super familar with ubuntu but I'm working on learning lol

No that is indeed the correct location, with 64gb RAM you should be good to go

#

Though there is something unusual in the path, can you specify how you exactly installed the server? Since for dedicated servers, especially for VMs, I recommend using SteamCMD to install it

#

Though from the screenshot, it looks like you first installed the Steam Client and then installed it through there? That would generally not be recommended, assuming that is what was done

I did install the Steam client originally, but since I couldn't open a GUI on a VM since you can't easily virtualize one I couldn't even open the Steam Client to download it. I did download the server files direct from Steam on my primary computer, then moved them over my network--but they didn't have start-server.sh or other expected files due to having downloaded the windows installation.

I then deleted the dedicated server folder as well as the zomboid server in home.

I then used SteamCMD with -beta 42.13.1 validate (after a few tries to figure out the pattern since we wanted to do that and not 42.14.1 which I also did via the unstable -beta command line).

It populated the dedicated server into the steam client folder so I assumed that's where it wanted to go.

#

I didn't do any force dir or anything. i did try to make the script but kept getting an error 'cat unknown command' lol

#

I also did this all under the sudo/primary user. I was going to do the pzuser as suggested by the setup guide but with the MC server running I didn't want to constantly swap users to view things in the gui interface <.<

#

I know there are ways to ghost/do that via the terminal but I'm still getting use to all that.

#

I have not tried to run the server via the steam client at any point. I run it via bash start-server.sh

#

via the terminal

#

the VM only has 16GB of ram atm actually. I might bump that up since I have two servers going with 8GB limits each.

I'm not sure if the 2GB +500MB per player is still the kinda rule of thumb for PZ even in B42.

#

Would memory issues cause the kind of lag/inability to perform actions I've described?

#

playing on it now and will check the area you mentioned when we start to have the issue to see what data I can grab

#

So new player is on and after 10 minutes, even in godmod, I can't enter vehicals/interact with certain things.

#

RAM looks perfectly fine, though now that you say you are on the old version on purpose, old bugs will still apply to it

#

For example, a lot of items and composting bins will cause that exact issue you are experiencing

#

Do you have any composting bins built on the server?

broken matrix
#

yeah this was the same issue we had on the newer version to. We had 7-8 on, 4 cars driving, one with a trailer--and someone hit a rabbit and after that it was an hour of misery XD

#

one car just teleported ontop of a wrecked one. someone died under a car randomly.

#

no one could move certain objects/get into cars etc.

#

I do have one

#

compost bin

#

investigating my poop bin

#

SO BOB DIES ALL THE TIME

#

lol and it seems to happen around when this is all going on

#

bob the rabbits XD

#

nwo that bobs dead I can get into cars

#

literally couldn't before that

#

the new player also got off right when bob died

#

of unknown causes in an unknown location

#

lol

I recommend removing any composting bins

broken matrix
#

Hm. What are the chances I can update without breaking the world.

#

Okay.

broken matrix
#

decent odds

spiral sage
#

My own server works fine since the last 2 updates

#

Some servers had various weird issues though, its random really

broken matrix
#

Yeah understandable. Taking a look at wh at I'd need to backup. My server ini / var files and world?

#

I'll do a fresh install as well via steamcmd--back up the needed files, then nuke the rest then pull it

#

Would you recommend I nuke the steam client folder as well so it can generate its own dir wherever it sees fit?

spiral sage
#

As a backup, I personally just backup the whole Zomboid folder

#

It is very compressible, so just put it into a zip

broken matrix
#

renamed both directories to -backup

#

there she goes

#

I should uninstall the steam client, doesn't really do anything since I can't open the gui on here

#

Generated in the same directory, made a fresh .steam/steam folder and everything (steamcmd) did.

#

couple of files in there

#

Is there a page that has a summary of known bugs on it anywhere?

#

Removing the composter and will proceed and see what we can see. Thank you for your insights @spiral sage. Got a better idea of what to look at/and how to think of things if it starts happening again.

So when playing on older versions, you can just check the patches for the up to date versions for the list of known bugs
