Well 8 is the default for zomboid. What OS are they running? Because if its not Linux you're not gonna be able to reliably run a server from that PC. Maybe not even play the game at all especially if you're using mods.

If they only have 8gb of ram, I imagine that ancient machine also has a slow processor and this game is harder on the processor than RAM.

If the total is 8gb then your friend should not change the default allocation at all
