I have previosly used the "host" option in game to host a game for myself and friends, but have now moved to a dedicated server. After moving the save files over i have found that if you join with the same username as on the hosted game you can continue from where you were, which is perfect.
One problem, my username on the previous server had a swear in it, which now is not allowed as a name due to some form of automatic filter on the server. The server is only me and 2 friends anyway, but i cant seem to find any options for this anywhere!
