a normal b41 carpenter run: the sequel of the sequel

G'day lads, hope you all have been well. If any of you happened to have read my previous story similar to this one, and wondered why I never continued it, my old pc sorta, well... spontaneously combusted. (cpu and screen went out at the same time..) Regardless of that unfortunate event, I have obtained a new one and am now back with another long-winded journal entry of an insane Scottish man building a compound near the river. This story takes place around 11 days after the infection, and our man of the hour, Fin McLeary, has arrived at a spot in which a legendary (I hope) base will be constructed. I have some pretty big plans for this run, so if all things go well, this may be the best base I will ever make. Well then, lets get into it shall we? There's work to be done!

As of now, this is the basic list I have for the base. As you can see, we are just out of West Point on a small peninsula. Close enough to be isolated, but far enough to not attract much attention. However, a bit earlier in the run an undesirable event occurred that, well... Sorta brought down half the town on the American Tire just before one of the entrances to West Point. This also happens to be one of my only ways INTO the town, but thats a worry for Future Fin™ to deal with.

We've got a generator, a beat up honda & trailer combo, a woodburning grill, and a freezer chock full of meats, veggies, and precious cheese.

I always try to get at least 5-6 cheeses before I set up shop, as I can make pizzas with em.

I dont know if I mentioned this in previous stories, but I view pizzas as a celebratory item made after something big has been finished. Finishing a house, successfully traveling to a dangerous area and back several times, etc.

Its a bit strange, but its a tradition of runs by now. I'll be damned if Fin can't enjoy a bit of Italian cuisine every once and a while!

I plan to have a two story house with enough room for lots of activities. We're talkin' a library, workshop, full fledged kitchen & pantry, laundry room with working appliances, the whole 9 yards.

I may even attempt to add a connected garage this time.

Not that I'm planning to build an entire garage to store vehicles, mind you,

but it would be nice to have someplace to park the CRX.

After all, it is the vehicle that got me here. I tend to cherish the first vehicle of a run quite a lot.

As you can clearly see here, we have a couple logs.

These will make a good headstart on the house, but we'll need many more than this to actually finish it and make it look nice.

I'm betting we'll get most of the framework done. First floor and around half of second.

Every time I get out into the woods in this game, I always hear zombies. Without fail.

Just brought the car over to the edge of the woods and blared the horn for 30 minutes. Nothin' came.

You can never be too sure though..

I usually make a rough blueprint of the house before I build it, but I'm wingin' it this time. Just building as I go, placing stuff where I feel like its natural.

The area I am standing in now is going to be the living room. Library will be behind it, in the opening in the wall. That small room to the left is the front mudroom, I'll have some clothing racks for boots and clothes there.

Kitchen will be somewhere off to the left, with a few branching rooms to act as different things.

The bedroom will definitely be upstairs though. I do not feel comfortable sleeping on the ground floor.

We're running a bit low on food. Despite having a freezer full of fresh items, I would prefer not to start chipping away at it until later in the run.

I'll have to head back into West Point. Preferably sooner than later so I can work my way in with a full stomach rather than out of desperation.

I have a couple of fishing nets out that I found, but they yeild nothing but bait fish 90% of the time. This would be great if I had a fishing rod, but I was unlucky enough not to find one before I came here.

I have finished the downstairs framework.

I've added a few scuffed POIs so you can see how everything is layed out.

Looking at it now, I need to move the doors in the laundry room over to the left by one. The washer and dryer need to be against the far back wall so their rain collectors are out of the way.

I'll do that later.

As for the bet I made earlier regarding how much I would get done with that batch of logs, I forgot to include the floor into my calculations. I probably wont even get half of the flooring upstairs done with what I have left.

We'll get there eventually though, eh?

Good afternoon lads, hope you have all been well.

Time to head back into West Point.

I've unloaded the trailer and car into those crates there. Overall we have around 130ish storage, 158+ if you count my bag and the passenger seat.

If we play our cards right, we'll be driving back out here with enough food to last us months.

First, we need to clear the way to West Point. As previously mentioned, a helicopter passed over and brought down a whole lotta undead at the entrance nearest the base.

I could go around, but that would just drag more on me due to the car. Best we slowly clear em out and move in from this end.

Found a good condition crowbar on a zombie. This'll definitely come in handy.

Sizeable amount of em here, but nothin' too major.

A lot of em are probably out in the trees. Best be careful.

Here we are. All the fresh food is gone, but I never grabbed the canned goods here.

Should be enough to fill the trailer.

Already full, and theres still a few shelves in the back.

Lots of bags o' beans, candy, canned food, the whole 9 yards.

Progress on the upstairs portion. I still don't know exactly how I want to lay this area out, but I'll just do what I did with the downstairs and wing it until it looks good.

Now that I'm thinking about it, that downstairs room there would make a great storage room.

Library could be upstairs right above it.

The workshop would be right next to it, and I could have a carport over to the right to easily unload into the storage.

Plus, I could always add another section on the other side of the carport for more storage later down the line if needed.

Yeah, lets do that.

Powers out. Just heard the grids fail from miles away.

Makes you second guess all the hopeful thoughts that someone's out there. That someone's comin' to save you.

We're not going to let a little rain stop our progress though, eh? Theres a house to be built!

Building the roof is always the most sketchy part of makin' a house, especially if its 2 stories and your laden with lots of planks.

One wrong move, and your fallin' 2 stories and breakin' your leg.

Dont ask me how I know that, definitely didnt happen 2 times in previous runs..

Wasn't expecting to find one until we went to the factory near Riverside, so this is a pleasant surprise.

Hello lads, I'm back to chip away at the house.

Heres what we have on the to do list:

but first, we need some food.

While we're waiting for our stale milk and bean stew to cook, I have a few things I need to address.

There is a rather nice truck in the Gigamart parking lot, would be a great replacement for the CRX as a loot runner.

However, we dont have much gas for both the CRX or this new truck, and the generator is steadily running out.

A generator to power a gas station is required, as well.

I had trouble just finding one to power the freezers, so we'll have to hope we get lucky with garages.

There is also the self storage we could check, too. Generators aren't too uncommon there.

Ah, look at that. Our stew is done.

Not the most filling, but it used most of our leftover scraps.

Less stuff lyin' around.

Alright, time to move all the frozens into the house.

Gotta do this quick. A lot of this stuff was in fridges when I found it, so its probably going to turn stale quickly if its not frozen.

Well, that wasn't too bad.

Worked on the kitchen flooring a bit more, as well. I'm thinking the sink will go on the far right wall, stove across from the ice freezer.

Maybe a fridge? Its not too hard to unthaw stuff in the oven though.

Ah, just realized I blocked the doorway to the laundry room..

We'll put the freezer over in the corner then, opposite the pantry room.

Thats better.

Moved over the doorway as well.

Well them, back to choppin'. We'll need lots of wood to finish this place.

198 planks will do for now.

That'll get me a solid chunk done.

Alright, so.. We've got another problem.

After looking over my storage, we wont have enough boxes of nails to finish the house.

If we do, its going to be by a very narrow margin.

Seeing as I need to go back into West Point for quite a few things, we may as well do this sooner than later.

In other news, the entire downstairs is walled in.

A few areas still arent sealed due to the upstairs not having flooring in some areas, but that will be done soon enough.

I do plan on plastering / painting a few, but now that you bring it up, it does look rather cozy.

Figured I might as well start a lil' farm.

If I can find one, I'd like to bring a second freezer out here to allow us to store all this.

Time to head back into West Point.

My first visit after a while of being out in the bush is always the most nervewracking.

You get so used to the quiet out here, that you often forget the rest of the world stopped moving weeks ago.

I'm sure we'll be alright. I'll take it slow.

Lets hope we get lucky on this trip and get another.

The street on the way in doesnt look that bad. Clearing it a week prior seemed to have had some lasting effects.

A zombie hand delivered me a very nice Mossberg.

In other news, We're right by the self storage.

Had to fight my way through a couple, but overall not too many.

This place is right next to a gas station too.

If we find a generator here, we're only a day or two away from a good gas source for the forseeable future.

Good lord.

This may be one of the best vehicles I have ever found.

And its key is right by the driver door.

Not what I was expecting from a truck with an appearance as it has.

I may leave the CRX here and take this home.

If memory serves me correctly, theres a garage door on the back of the self storage we can gain access through.

This stepside also has a key.

We're gettin' real lucky with the vehicles today folks.

We'll be back for quite a lot of these. I plan on having a garage / mass parking for vehicles.

Garage for the nicer, more rare collectables, of course.

Luckilly for us, the storage unit is devoid o' zomboids.

I hear one or two lurkin' in the storage units though, so we'll have to proceed with caution.

Found another one in a different unit, plus some mattresses.

Won't have to drive all the way home now, I can sleep here.

Theres lots of good furniture in this place too. I'll have to stop back by and pick some up another time.

Don't know why I would ever need this many generators, but its comforting to know we'll never be at a loss I suppose.

Last time I was close to it, there were hordes lining the streets. Lets hope they have moved on.

There aren't as many as there were before, but there are still quite a few.

We can handle it, just gotta take it slow.

Trying to save 5 minutes by tackling an extra 2 zombies eventually leads to mistakes.

Theres still a few large clumps of zombies here and there, but not close enough for the time being to warrant any response.

We'll deal with them as they come.

Truck is filled up, plus an extra gas can I found. We'll be good for a long while.

I'll need to come back and fill up the copious amounts of empty gas cans at the base, but that can wait.

Even found a couple of fresh cheeses.

They will probably go stale soon, but we'll use em as they go.

Theres another freezer here, just noticed. We'll definitely be takin' this back with us.

Alright, thats all this place has to offer besides gas. I would like to check out the nearby factory and burger joint before we go though.

Not getting through all that with just a cricket bat.

Doesn't matter too much, I found a couple of boxes of nails here and there. Should get me most of the way there.

Hello lads, good to see yall again. I'm back for more house buildin'.

Hopefully I should have enough nails to finish this place. I have around 9-10 boxes and most of the downstairs done, so we should be alright.

I'm going to need a lot of nails to do the roof though. We already have the basic one up, but the gable roof I have planned is going to be a chore to complete.

Aw hell, my boots have a hole in em.

I swear I have a spare lying around here somewhere..

Just had to embark on a day long journey of destroying the stairs and railings to access a wall I forgot to fill in.

Had to take down that entire staircase to finish those two walls in front of me.

Not too bad, but I wont act like I didnt have a mild heart attack thinking the railing was glitched and was indestructible..

Apart from a few internal walls, all the frames have been walled in.

Now all we need are windows and doors, and that will wrap up the buildin' aspects. And the roof.

After that, we'll need to furnish the place.

Eventually I want to add some big fancy windows here, overlooking the river.

I think it would make an excellent sitting area to relax and read.

.. Also have to finish the downstairs flooring. Don't know how I managed to forget a lot of that was unfinished.

Hello gang, good to see you all again.

We've got a few more problems to add to the ever growing list that need to be taken care of today.

Mostly: nails.

We have 5 boxes left, and while thats enough to finish the house, it wont be enough for everything else I have planned.

Once I wrap up the floor, I'm going to get the storage room assembled with whatever nails I have left and head into town to raid the suburbs.

I should be able to drive relatively close no issue, seeing as I mostly cleared out the area around the gigamart 1-2 weeks prior. (in game)

Made some good progress on the storage room.

I'm going to unload everything from the truck and trailer and prepare for a trip back into West Point.

I'll grab a few windows and furniture pieces while I'm there as well.

I need to drive carefully though. I dont know if I ever mentioned this, but I spawned in Muldraugh. On the way there, I found this trailer amidst a bunch of wrecked cars, so its not in the best condition.

There were about 30 on the road in.

Not too bad, as I have spent a bit of time leveling up long blade.

That, and I found a very good primary weapon in the form of a brush cutter.

Lots of axes too. The carpenter axe I have been using is on its last legs, so these will do nicely.

As you can probably tell, it's been quite a minute since I have posted anythin'. Don't worry, my PC didnt explode again.

Its rainin' today. Good for the crops, I suppose.

A lot of the fun of returning to a run is trying to remember where everything is.

One of the plants has flies, and I cant find my spray anywhere.

Tried to get to the military checkpoint and got ran out by hundreds of zombies.

I'll need to eat these first before anything else, as we can only fit half of this harvest in the freezer.

Just noticed I have grown a proper head of hair.

Fairly sure I started off with a buzz cut, so this is quite impressive.

I havent been into town in a few weeks, so there are probably a lot of zombies in areas I have previously cleared.

Case and point. This isnt really a lot per se, but still.

Alright, gas cans are all fueled up. Thats one item off the list.

Nearly got jumped by a zombie when I was looking through some containers.

I've said this before, but one of the problems with living so far away from the undead is you get too comfortable.

Getting used to walking around corners and not expecting a zombie is a bad habit.

Finally found a tight fitting leather jacket.

Lets hope I dont rough it up too soon.

If memory serves me right, theres a lot of food still left in this general store.

I didn't take much last time I went through here, just the freezer from the gas station across the street.

That is more than enough to finish the house, and gives us a bit of wiggle room to start on other projects.

Plenty of Metal Sheets, metalworking supplies, etc.

Quite a bit of food, too. That general store we stopped at before getting to the suburbs had a lot of canned food.

I also got some new diecast cars.

Brought the work light outside so I could finish removing all the grass where the carport is going to be.

AEBS said its going to rain tomorrow.

I should get all the rain collectors in, take advantage of that.

Those two barrels there are for the bathroom.

The two holes over to the right are for the washer (left) and the kitchen sink (right).

Might as well add another collector to the bathroom so I can use the tub comfortably.

I'm thinking about running down to the factory in West Point and grabbing a few gravel bags I remember seeing there, see if I cant pave a bit of the carport.

It can even charge batteries, pretty useful. Its really heavy though, the bug is strugglin' to pull it along. I may have to park it just after the bridge and come back with the truck.

Ended up makin' it. Took a little while on the dirt approaching the house, but we got there in the end.

I was looking around through the crafting menu earlier, and noticed that I can melt down jewlery to use in ammo making.

I'll be collecting bits of jewlery as I find em now.

This F150 would be a great work truck. The only problem is its a bit worse for ware.

50% overall condition, and most of that is mechanical issues.

Still, it has a key and gas. I'll come back to grab it another time.

I would have gotten more, but the motel I stopped by last to get more from had most of them smashed in.

I got a few more diecast cars while I was out.

Another Mazda Miata in Classic Red,

and an R32 GTR. Very nice.

On an unrelated note, the potatoes are finally seed bearing.

Potatoes last a very long time out of the freezer, which is nice, because I have no more space for anything in it.

Its been raining the day or two, which means all the rain collectors will be full.

I still haven't gotten sinks for the house yet, so might as well go grab a few. Won't be too hard.

Matter of fact, why dont we go get that F150 we saw earlier?

I found a padded jacket a while back, so the walk wont be too bad.

On another note, the F150 has a LOT of power behind it. It'll make a great work truck once we fix up the engine.

It runs decent now, but the engine is sitting at 38% I believe, so not the best.

Its also much bigger than the other vehicles.

Theres quite a lot of room for upgrades here though. Toolboxes, armor, roof racks with lights, the whole 9 yards.

Plus areas to store 3 gas cans and a tent.

Anyhow, lets get these sinks in.

Absolutely perfect. Fresh water on hand whenever I need it.

I also picked up a toilet while I was out to finish the bathroom.

Well then. Seeing as we are no longer worried about water or food for the forseeable future, why dont we start to dabble in mechanics?

I have a few cars lying around that would looove to be torn apart in the name of leveling mechanics.

I wanted to move these out of the road anyway, so this works out nicely.

Already up to mechanics 3. Good progress.

A part of me feels bad for this car, but it was wrecked anyway.

Same with the sedan and the van there.

Quite literally irredeemable.

I wont be close to armoring up vehicles for a while, but I can repair engines now, among other things.

I've been thinking.

This S10 has much better internals than the F150 over there, but the F150 is better overall.

We COULD take some parts from this, seeing as they are both heavy duty class.

The downside being the S10 has less useful parts, but will still run very well due to the engine, and the F150 becoming a very good work truck.

I still need to level up mechanics a bit before I can reliably take off the parts though, so.

All in good time.

Late night mechanic work.

I've started to transfer over a lot of the good parts from the S10 to the F150.

We still need more engine parts, but theres quite a lot of vans in the factory parking lot that I'm sure would love to donate their internals.

She's lookin' pretty good now.

Only needs some engine parts, and she'll be ready for service.

Lets go get some eh? We can fuel 'er up while we're out.

62% is a much healthier number.

Theres still a couple cars I will never use left in this lot though. Lets see if we can't get near the 80% mark.

Got it upto exactly 80%.

Now that I'm thinking about it, we need to repair the gas tank as well, so its probably best I dont fill it up until I know what can be done regarding it.

Seems I'll need to level up my metalworking before I can do any further work on the truck.

I need metalworking for a multitude of things anyway, so its not that big of an issue.

Lets head back into town to see if we cant chip away at metalworking.

Theres nothing I can do about the wound dirtiness at the moment.

If I dare glance at this bandage the wrong way, I will bleed out in seconds.

That healthbar was full before I took off the bandage.

Simply trying to replace it does that to me.

Not to mention it instantly gets dirty, so..

Its not bleeding anymore. All I need to do now is make sure it has clean bandages on it.

Figured out what partly caused that bite.

I left my leather jacket and armor at the house.

.. At least I kept the jacket pristene. As if that matters anymore.

Wanna know what the worst bit about this is?

I cant equip prostetics. At all.

I cut off my entire arm, which means we'll be stuck with one arm for the rest of the run.

... This oughta be interesting, eh?

Y'know lads, I've been thinking. While we could continue the run with only one arm, theres a lot that we couldn't do. Two handed weapons are gone, a lot of things become inaccessable, etc. Because of this, I'm going to put this run on standby for now, and start a new one. I'll be documenting it, similar to this one (maybe less longwinded..), but with new things learned obviously. Mainly not to 3x speed because I am too lazy to wait an extra few minutes..
