Hello, I am playing on a dedicated server through Indifferent Broccoli. I keep getting "Lost connection to server" error message. We have contacted the server support team and it is not a server issue. We have tried everything from allowing the game through my firewall, changing my network settings to IPv4 only, to increasing my RAM allocation in game to 8GB, to editing Steam settings disabling steam overlay in game and disabling network relay.
The creator of the server also uses the server and they do not have any issues with the game. We are both on the same WIFI network.
I tried using the server as an Admin and it worked for a while but had extreme lag. My game had lag from the beginning but was working (for about 3 days), now I play for 5-10 min and the game crashes.
If anyone can help me that would be great. Thank you.

Turn off steam relay
That is not the Steam relay, the relay is specifically a checkmark in the Join screen when editing the server details
That is also off.
Can you check if this same issue happens on other servers?
I was able to play for a few minutes with no lag. Didnt have time to wait for it to crash but I can keep trying. Looked promising though. Not sure why a private server wouldn't work for me but works for another.
This is happening to other servers hosted by Brocolli, it has something to do with RAM spiking to 1000% and then Brocolli forcing hard restart on it. Server state saves, but player states don't pointing to host back up data crash. Not sure whats pushing the RAM up so high
Interesting. So why doesn't the other person playing on the same server have this issue? He is on the same network as me as well.
They gave us a new server and we wiped it clean. Still having the "connection to server lost" error.
Its happening to you specifically? Im talking the servers are straight crashing not just a player
Are there any server site you can recommend? We want to try getting another one.
Yes. Me only
I do not know
If anyone does know or has seen this issue before, further help/direction would be appreciated.
By new server, did the server also get a new IP?
It is also possible your own internet would have issues with Brocolli servers, can you check if it happens on any other server hosted by them?
yes
My BF uses the same wifi and the same server and has no issues
I uninstalled the game and it let me play some. It was immediately kicking me out so that's an improvement. The game worked at first too so we will see if the issue comes up again after a few gameplays.
Interesting, that would certainly rule out that possibility then
Might focus it more on the PC though
Like, what happens if you log into your BFs Steam account and try playing there
If you also get kicked, it might mean something is sketchy on the specific PC
If it doesnt, it could imply something with the account
Yeah thats why i uninstalled the game just now. If this doesnt work then i will try what you suggested.
I have updated all my drivers and updated everything. None of my other games are giving me issues.
I can also play on the public pz servers no issues.
We have tried two different servers and i have uninstalled and re-installed the game and it keeps crashing.
Not really sure what to do anymore
Additional information: usually it breaks as soon as I try to move things from containers or try to open doors/cars.
Tried hotspot and it wouldnt work on there at all. Wouldnt even let me log into the server.
Can you share your logs.zip file found in %UserProfile%\Zomboid?
And can you share all “hs_err_pid” files found in your main game folder “Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid”?
Sure. I reset my PC to see if it was a software issue and sadly that did not fix it either.
I dont have the game installed currently so I dont have the hs_err_pid file. I can install and wait for it to fail again and then send that
I dont see the hs_err_pid file in here
The err pid would be generated after a crash, so if you didnt crash after reinstalling the game, then no err pids would exist
Can you reproduce the crash and then check for them?
You also shared the wrong file, I need the logs.zip file specifically
The game doesn’t crash. I get kicked from the game I am playing and it gives a “connection to server lost” error message and then the only two options are to quit to main menu or quit to desktop. I will try to recreate in a bit and take a screenshot.
Ok I’ll see if I can grab the correct file. Sorry about that.
I see, I think your post title must have confused me in that case. Unfortunately, connection lost is purely tied to the network and its stability, so logs wont help
Since the issue happens even with the hotspot, it would imply an issue with your network card
Can you reproduce it even on another PC on the same network to confirm that?
Or do you have any external wireless usb connectors?
I see where the confusion might have happened, sorry about that. The other PC on this network works fine.
What confuses me is that I can play solo and on public networks just fine. I am only having an issue on private servers.
It is a gaming laptop and I think the parts are soldered in.
Hm, yeah honestly it is very unusal that only the private servers are a problem... did you test multiple of them? Like having one friend host and another friend host, do you get kicked out from both of them?
Also, do you get any "port 16262 closed" errors on the loading screens?
We bought two different servers from two different providers and it happened on both.
I believe so yes.
I went to my firewall and allowed those ports through.
It means the server host has to open them, not you as the client
I think there is some confusion, by "private" servers, you mean servers hosted by service providers?
Since usually private server means its hosted through the Main Menu > Host button
I see. Yes.
Not this.
Sorry for the confusion.
Hm, can you try editing the server info on the join screen and make sure you have the "Use Steam Relay" option unchecked?
That should get rid of the error
It’s been unchecked the whole time. Didn’t fix the issue unfortunately.
Interesting, try checking it as a test?
I tried it as well and it still crashes.
At this point I have done everything google and ChatGPT have suggested. Nothing works. It’s ok, I’ll just uninstall. Thanks for trying.
Try increasing your ram on your pc.
Many of my players have had to do this or they crash on load. Default ram is set way too low if there are many items on the ground nearby
How to increase ram in project zomboid so your game runs faster.
I have allocated half my ram already. Did not work.
This patch has been rough, I've lost half my players since it's release.
