Could you elaborate what you mean by Steam Connect? Since there is no such feature named like that on Steam

You can either rent a server or use your own PC as a server
So far I have always been the host and invited my brother to play without renting a server
Is there a way to play directly in the same network via LAN to get better performance and less lag

Usually if you just host through Steam and invite them, you should already have minimal latency, since both of you are on LAN
If you want even less ping, you can install the dedicated server tool then have your brother join using your Local IP of the PC that is hosting

Follow the "Install "Project Zomboid dedicated server" via SteamCMD" section.
For B42, use this install command:
app_update 380870 -beta unstable validate
