Nektucky was a place that existed more out of habit than necessity. A small town off the beaten track, between cornfields and forests that no one counted anymore...

Nektucky, Kentucky – spring 1996
One main street. A diner with a neon sign that sometimes flickered out. A gas station by the state road. A school, a church, and a police station where night shifts seemed to last forever. People had known each other here for years. They knew who drank too much, who owned a gun, who never locked their doors. Life was predictable. Safe in its boredom.

The first signs came quietly, too quietly for anyone to take them seriously. A man appeared at the clinic with a wound on his arm. He claimed he had been bitten during a fight. He was aggressive, restless, and didn’t respond to pain. Doctors assumed drugs or shock and discharged him the same day. Two days later, he came back. Dead. Or rather, not entirely.

Strange reports began appearing at the police station. Someone attacking pedestrians. Someone else biting his own brother. An ambulance was called to a house where no one answered the phone anymore. Local radio spoke of “disturbing incidents.” Television remained silent.

People said it was temporary. That it would pass. That it was a problem of big cities, not places like Nektucky. In the evenings, life still went on as normal. Someone was filling up their car. Someone was eating dinner at the diner. Someone locked their door for the night, for the first time in years.

No one knew yet that these were the last peaceful days they would remember. No one knew that the world was ending. And when they finally understand it… it will already be too late.

The hospital in Nektucky was not prepared for anything beyond broken bones and heart attacks. Twelve beds. One operating room. Equipment that had seen better days. The first patient arrived late in the evening...

Bitten. In shock. Aggressive. He did not respond to commands, fought the paramedics, screamed without words. Doctors spoke of drugs. Of psychosis. Of post traumatic shock. When the heart stopped, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Three minutes later, the body moved. The nurse did not have time to scream. She became the first victim no one would ever officially mention.

Within hours, the hospital filled with the wounded. Bite marks. Torn flesh. People brought in from homes, streets, and cars. Some died on the spot. Others on the way. All of them came back. Sedation stopped working. Pain made no difference. Death did not either. The staff began to disappear. Some ran. Others stayed because they had nowhere to go.
