#[B42] Rosewood Gas Station base and mod talk

lapis crest
#

Showcase of my character (In her Sunday best) and my little corner of Rosewood.

The gas station has a house on the 2nd floor, and the gas is right there, so I save a lot of time in fuel trips and I can run quite a few generators easily. That and the easy loot from the W900 truck mods meant I had a lot of spare time, and I figured I'd build something instead of just cranking up the zed population.

So I built a 4 story building with a loft/penthouse thing, crafting spaces, a warehouse and a 2 story garage. The garage had to be this big to fit trailer boxes inside and allow safe unloading of loot indoors.

The 2nd story of the garage and the corner store are now housing freezers full of food for the winter, the lower space has building materials and car repair tools, plus reserve gas and water.

#

SouthWest of the garage is some space for crops and SouthEast there's an animal pen with cows, pigs and sheep, and a crafting area for furnaces and kilns

#

The rest of the gas station is a combination of parking lot and cargo loading/unloading yard for the trailer trucks

#

It's still a wip, some of the wood walls are probably getting replaced with stone, and I still need to build the gates, though I'm waiting until the double gate bug has been sorted out by the devs

pale mirage
#

You made a giant building as an extension to the Rosewood gas pump? That is amazing!

#

Also the inside looks really good too

#

The only one L with this base is that it doesn't have immediate access to a water source but that is fine mostly

lapis crest
wheat cosmos
#

Looks really rad tho

lapis crest
#

This all started because I wanted an enclosed garage to unload loot and repair cars without getting jumped by zeds

#

and then I figured I was already investing a lot in building the garage, might as well build up and take advantage of the space

lapis crest
#

Guess it's a better look without the fancy jacket

blazing depot
#

You have infinite storage lol

#

Are those freezers full?

lapis crest

Almost all of them

I drop the empty ones as items

blazing depot
#

ah okay. I couldn't remember if they draw power equivalent to their contents

#

I thought a half empty one only draws half as much power as a full one. Can't remember

#

No fuel trailer yet?

blazing depot
#

lol those are crazy useful. Had one on an online server. Filling it up sucks though

#

Curious to see how farming goes for you. I can't be assed

lapis crest
wheat cosmos
#

Well I imagine that's limited

lapis crest
#

I don't think I'll last that long

blazing depot
#

That'll be a sad day. You'll have to make another gas station base then

#

I wish they never changed farming so drastically. Or made it more likely to yield a proper crop without so much attention necessary to keep plant afflictions under control

lapis crest
#

Eh, I'll probably just take the tanker in the Muldraugh industrial park and get all the gas from the Rosewood south gas station

blazing depot
#

6 months is way too long to wait for a perishable

lapis crest
#

The only thing that survived to harvest was some chives

blazing depot
#

That's too bad. I was looking forward to someone actually having a big crop eventually but it seems like farming just isn't worth the effort.

lapis crest
#

The problem is that most crops take far too long to harvest and there's too high a chance of them dying from disease or getting destroyed by weather

#

200 days is a lot of chances for a storm, mildew, etc.

[B42] Rosewood Gas Station base and mod talk

#

So far no bugs. It introduces a few new items (ice cream maker, ice cream mix, and flavored ice creams) and recipes. It allows you to keep making ice cream after the power goes out

#

All you need is milk and white sugar, plus whatever ingredients you want if you want the flavored ice creams, which can be worth it

#

New flavors have different nutrition stats and bonuses, here are some examples and the base ice cream stats for reference

#

Ingredients are fairly intuitive, I.E.: Strawberry ice cream needs strawberry jam, chocolate ice cream needs cocoa, cookie ice cream needs cookies, and so on

#

It works really well combined with Sapphs and the Farming Expansion mods since they provide recipes for crafting sugar and other ingredients

lapis crest
#

@deft magnet Finally checked the charcoal amounts produced by the dome kiln. Looks like they're the same as the charcoal barrel

#

Making the kiln isn't exactly expensive, but it's still much easier to get a barrel :/

deft magnet
#

its just tedious, and masons trowels arent all that common

#

kilns do look nicer aesthetically

lapis crest
#

I've actually found quite a few embedded in zeds

deft magnet
#

good to know the outputs are the same

deft magnet

but right now im only around a month in and have way less zombies due to the zombie population and heatmap being wildly different

Any thoughts on my base?

i havent done much building yet

#

despite my occupation being a carpenter

i think i have the peak over a course of like 50 days

#

though i visited the research lab south of rosewood yesterday and after killing like 200 zombies i attracted another 200-300 due to my firearm noise

#

so its not so bad

lapis crest

My first axe crafted from scratch. Metal comes from car wrecks, wood came from trees I chopped around the gas station, clay for the molds was foraged from roads around Rosewood

Making a mace after some comments by ICEtea

#

Swing speed looks nice, not sure about how effective this guy is, I'll test it somewhere.

lapis crest
#

Testing spear with metal spearhead. I have spear skill lvl 10 and maintenance 10.
I think I messed up the spearhead by killing a zed with it before sharpening it. It's 3 encumbrace, 1 heavier than the fire hardened spear. It behaves pretty much like the fire-hardened spear.

deft magnet
#

whats the damage bar on it?

#

stone head / bind head spears all have similar damage

#

atleast visually

lapis crest
#

Testing the mace. I have long blunt lvl 8.
Damage is decent and swing speed is very good for a long blunt. Durability is pretty good apparently, but I'd need to use it longer to really test that

lapis crest
#

I messed up the head though, I don't think it's supposed to be red freshly crafted. I hit a zed with it before sharpening it, I think that messed it up

deft magnet
#

yeah most likely

#

damage is good though

#

for now i only create simple metal blades

#

it levels my metalworking plus that way i have a steady supply of improvised spears

#

as i have lots and lots of twine and long sticks

lapis crest
#

Testing the long sword (forged, not scrap or simple blade, the good high level blade). I have long blade level 4.
It's a two handed blade, but fits into a belt slot like a one handed blade.
It'd probably be devastating if I had long blade leveled up.
Durability is probably good since I'm not seeing any change in the bar.

#

Testing the short sword, which still uses the long blade skill funny enough.
It's a one-handed blade.
Seems like it does noticeably less damage though it's still a decent backup weapon.
Same durability comment as the other weapons.

#

My final veredict is, I'm considering swapping the spear for a shotgun and long sword.
Since the long sword can be attached to the belt, you can have a two handed melee and a two handed firearm on your back without mods
The spear is still a better weapon than the sword for logistics reasons (a lot easier to make and materials are more abundant), but there's a niche for the sword if you want a 2 handed melee weapon that fits a belt attachment

#

I'd use the shotgun to draw the zeds in and the sword to finish them off, which stops the annoying "zombie drip feed" issue I've been having lately

deft magnet
#

this is nice

#

and honestly with decent maintenance skill i'd expect forged weapons to last you atleast 300+ zombie kills before they break

#

very resource-hungry

lapis crest
#

The problem with all of these is that they're at the bottom of the tech tree for metalworking

#

they're not really resource hungry because metal and wood are so abundant, but they can be very time intensive to craft if you have to make a metal bar from small bits of scrap metal one at a time

#

OTOH when you dismantle a wreck, you get several metal bars or half bars which you can quickly turn into swords

#

It's getting the craft stations and the skill level in metalworking that's the hard part

#

but the thing is that because metalworking can make most if not all the tools and weapons in the game, and because there's so many metal sources, it's a valuable skill in and of itself

deft magnet
#

yes

#

high effort high reward kinda thing

lapis crest
#

Yup

lapis crest
#

Update: The spear durability issue turned out to be a problem with a mod I was using. Crafted spears do have 100% durability at the right skill levels

deft magnet
#

epic

lapis crest
#

I'd forgotten I had that mod in the first place. This is good

#

it'll make the combat testing of the weapons in LV more accurate

pale mirage
#

Planning to go full into the Long Blades hopefully

lapis crest
#

The one caveat I see here is that long blade books seem to be even rarer than aiming/reloading books

#

Just dropping in to say that I hadn’t noticed this thread (or channel) before and your base is absolutely bananas in scope. Well done, sir. jaques_beaver

lapis crest
#

Louisville Round 2. This time I'm not scouting, I'm clearing. Gonna take that 3 garage mansion and start clearing LV

lapis crest
#

metal tipped spears kinda suck. They're not singificantly more powerful or durable, they break down about as fast as the fire hardened ones, and they go blunt after a few kills

deft magnet
#

feel free to report it, i think thats pretty underwhelming

#

sharpness as a whole needs to have reduced drain too

lapis crest
#

I suppose if I was designing it, I'd give metal tipped spears longer reach and more durability to compensate for the investment in making them. Especially more durability

#

So the can reinforced bat finally broke.
I cleared most of the checkpoint with the bat, so I can't complain.
Considering it's made out of a carved branch, tin cans and screws, I think it's a very cost efficient and reasonably effective weapon

#

provided you have good skill in long blunt and maintenance at least

deft magnet
lapis crest
deft magnet
#

still worthy of a report then, proving my point?

#

nothing will end up being tweaked if the community doesnt provide feedback

lapis crest
#

Feedback on a system is distinct from a bug report. "I don't like the way this works" is very different from "This isn't working as intended"

#

I know there's a bug reporting system, not sure there's a feedback mechanism for gameplay stuff

#

Kills so far by weapon type

lapis crest
#

Someone asked for tips today, so I figured I'd write them here and link to them when asked again.

The early game is critical. You need a good weapon, a backpack, a water bottle, a little food and a vehicle. Medical supplies and denim/leather clothes are nice to have but not indispensable. After that you need to clear a base of zombies, usually a place that is easy to secure (few windows and entrances), you can live in (bed, fridge, stove) and is close to points of interest (stores, etc.)
If you survive getting all those, you need to prepare for power and water shutoff by getting a generator (for lights, fridges and cooking) and a few rain catchers or living close to a water source.
After that it's a matter of stockpiling enough food, water and resources to outlast the winter.

Combat is the first thing you need to learn. Gunshots will draw zombies towards you, early on you most likely do not want to shoot because there'll be more zeds than ammo on you, so you're better off with a melee weapon, like a baseball bat, axe, hammer, meat cleaver, crowbar, etc.

Bites are fatal, melee weapons are more effective at their max hit distance so always keep as much distance between you and zombies. Backpedal while you face the zeds, and hit them while they're trying to reach you.

Don't fight more zombies than you can handle, which depends on how experienced (irl) you are, your character's weapons and skills, and the area around you (fences, windows, etc.) Usually 1-2 unarmed and 3-4 with a good melee weapon is a good rule of thumb at the start.

Take care of your character. Don't fight tired, hungry, sleepy or exhausted. Don't ignore overheating or uncomfortable conditions. Don't carry too much stuff. Don't run everywhere all the time, you will get tired. Always carry bandages on you.

Prefer weapons which are light, they consume less stamina per attack. Ditch heavy clothes or armor, they'll exhaust your character and exhaustion kills.

lapis crest
#

Bourbon drive is so much worse than the army checkpoint...

lapis crest
#

Reached the LV 3 garage mansion at Bourbon drive without injury.
Now I just need to set up some gennies, patch the windows, extend the fences and I'll have a working FOB.
Gonna set up some storage areas, then start trucking in supplies from Rosewood, then scout the area around and start clearing zeds

silent cypress
#

Nice.

lapis crest
#

The fortifications aren't helping much, random zeds keep wandering in. I could build a gate, but they'll break it down eventually. Not sure how long it'd take them, but probably not long

lapis crest
#

Looking better now, not concerned about random zeds wandering into camp now

silent cypress
#

Nice.

lapis crest
#

The Louisville outpost. Will be home while I explore and clear LV, plus a staging area for loot.
Gonna make a trip to Rosewood to check on animals and gennies and for fresh food.
Then I'm pushing to the LV library.

lapis crest
#

And you can drive in front of St. Pellegrine's without aggroing a lot of zombies. The road seems far enough from the hospital that the zeds don't see or hear you

lapis crest
#

butchering animals close to living ones, at least unrelated ones from different breeds, doesn't seem to upset them

lapis crest
#

decided to delay the LV stuff for a bit to save as many animals as I can fit in the ranch

lapis crest

After retreating for the night, decided to push towards the library instead.
Bourbon St. as always is thick with zombies

lapis crest

Four hours and thirty minues later, I've managed to advance a little over a block, and spent 3-4 maces.
I believe I might have to return to the FOB earlier than expected due to exhaustion and running out of maces

Decided to cut my stay at Louisville short. I went to the city library, loot was disappointing, and after spending days fighting to get to another bookstore I realized it wasn't worth it.
I'm taking most of the loot and food I gathered on the truck, and leaving behind a few things to mothball the base if I ever need it later (generator, freezer, some crates, firewood, rain barrels etc.)
I took a few pics as I was saying goodbye to my LV outpost.

#

Turning off the generator and sitting at the spearcrafting benches one last time before leaving

#

I will say the spear traps worked, even if a bit janky.
Goodbye LV outpost, you served me well.

#

And one last look at the LV army checkpoint with all the loot I stripped from the zeds and left behind
Decided it wasn't worth picking up after all

Almost home, hope the base is still up.
That brown state patrol car looks fun. Might come back with a flatbed and pick it up

#

As she drives home, I'm considering retiring this character

#

Animals are fine, though they def. need some TLC and pen cleaning. So I guess you can in fact leave for long periods of time and return to base without problems

#

I think I should retire this character.
It feels narratively satisfying to end in a high note. She went to LV, survived, and learned she didn't need more stuff, she just wanted it. She missed her little ranch more than she wanted the stuff from the city, and so she returned to her home

I build a garage, my own pad, a fortified compound with walls all around and some towers.
I collected cars I found useful.
I've made most of the crafting stations.
I think I might revisit this save once in awhile, but I don't have the itch to keep doing more things in here.

lapis crest

And brewing beer and wine, plus distilling alcoholic beverages and making vinegar

#

Here's an example.
I was asked how to make sugar recently.
You need to craft a fermentation pot, then fill it with water, and get some quicklime (from crushing limestone and kiln-ing it in a pottery kiln).
This will create the sugar base, which is then cooked until done in an oven.
It's 10 encumbrance, so I like to use large commercial ovens but you can use campfires or regular stoves

#

Be careful not to burn it for maximum yield.
Burnt sugar preparation will yield less sugar.

#

Then get some cheesecloth, and filter out the cooked sugar preparation, and voila, white sugar

It's also getting a bit monotonous to stay constantly on top of milk and wool production, it kinda chains me to my base and I don't like it

lapis crest
#

Good practice to set up your crafting stations with chair space, to allow for stamina regen

lapis crest
#

Beer is a bit complex to make since it's a bunch of different steps from different crafting stations.
Assuming you have barley seeds aready, the first step is to prepare malt, which is done with baking trays, seeds and water
So far, so good, simple (ish).

#

Malt takes a couple of days to germinate before we can turn it into wort for brewing beer, so I'll check again after a couple days

Really easy to reach the bridge via the promenade

Built an OP in the FOB overlooking the gate now. Still need to beef it up a bit but it does the job

Okay, gotta be more careful with the truck in downtown LV from now on

#

So it doesn't matter if you're sitting indoors or outdoors, your fatigue recovery is the same

#

It also doesn't seem to matter if you're sitting on a char, bench or on the ground.
Can't say if it's the same for cars or seats that should be comfy

#

Walking completely prevents stamina regen.
Standing still without sitting is so slow you might as well walk

#

So I knew how satiety covered up for being underfed, but I didn't know just how bad it is

#

on the plus side, you could be snacking all day to keep the "well fed" bonus and not really risk gaining weight

lapis crest
#

Now I can confirm for B42.11.
Exhaustion is recovered at the same rate, doesn't matter if you sit on the ground, in a comfy chair or in a car

#

In terms of stamina
Running (default: Shift key) is a lot cheaper than I thought
Sprinting (default: Alt key) is more like I thought running was

#

Running and sprinting burn the same calories (weird)
Running does burn more calories, but the difference is minimal
Walking prevents stamina regen but doesn't cost stamina

lapis crest
#

Little 2hr catnaps (no sleep traits) can recover 25% of your sleep meter.
It's enough to give you a few extra waking hours, but without traits it's not as good
Still could be a good idea to plan for some nap time if you're going into a hot zone

I just realized I was wrong to use so many crates to store stuff in my base
I should've made like a freight yard and use trailers instead of crates
and then I'd never have to pull things out of cars and take them to storage, I'd just parked the trailer next to the storage and unloaded directly
I'd needed a base with a lot more land area to fit the trailers and for driving space, but that's not hard to find, lots of buildings with wide parking lots in the game
Definitely something to consider for my next run

Interesting spot for a base. Next to a gas station, (mostly) fenced in 2 sides, close to big sources of loot and homes so you can bring in furniture and appliances

IIRC it's 6 planks or 2 logs, plus 4 nails

Already went indoors and cleared every room.
Still have to go through the other building in the complex

made it to the second building's low rooftops (there's a higher level)
Fought in the dark a bit inside the building, would not recommend it, but I didn't have a genny on me and I thought the building was empty enough

It's been weeks since I've last seen another person... Living, person.
Been lucky those freaks out there haven't so much as scratched me.
Maybe the General on the radio was right, maybe I am immune.
Don't feel like letting myself get chomped to find out.
I can only do chores at night in the basement.
It feels safer. Like maybe they can't hear me down here.
Help will come. It has to. There's still water and power,
even if the radio and tv have been on repeat recently...
...Right?
