That is just a graphic thing.
You have to have foraging "on" (click the magnifying lense and select focus if wanted and "search")
You'll get a faded area outside a bright circle, that is your search radius.
Then as you walk about, you'll get little arrows for items of interest.

Right click those arrows, and either collect or discard - you get XP for both.

You can find them just laying around, but usually not.

And I think you need like a small rock and a large rock and the stick / handle for the whole thing, but I haven't done much crafting yet.
Can mostly only help with the foraging part 😦
