-# Act 1: ‘World Watch’ (1968)
The year is 1968, many years before the global pandemic of Cordyceps hit the general population. Many people believed that viral infections such as the common cold, the flu, or any other related virus could lead to the end of the world. Such discussions always sparked debate in both the scientific community, and even the general public. With global warming becoming more of a threat every single day due to the rapid expansionism of countries around the world, a debate was sparked discussing potential other biological sources that could be the downfall of humanity.
The studio’s lights beamed down on the set of “World Watch”, a popular science program aimed at discussing all things science. On March 15th, 1968, a special edition sparked from the widespread public debate of biological threats to mankind was aired on television. The show’s host, Murray Lawson, sat across from two distinguished scientists who came on the show for the interview. Dr. Harper, an Epidemiologist focused in virology, and Dr. Neuman, an Epidemiologist focused in Mycology from the University of Madrid.
[2;41m[0m[0;2m“[0;33mGood evening, viewers[0m.” Murray said, adjusting his position in his seat. “[0;33mIn recent weeks, the world has been struck with debate about these potential ‘doomsday’ viruses, a purely hypothetical infection that would end the world as we know it. For many of you aspirant scientists out there, we at World Watch know you operate on logic and facts. So tonight, we’ve brought on two people who are leaders in their fields to… share their thoughts with us. Please welcome Dr. James Harper, the lead of the Centers for Disease Control, and Dr. Neuman, the lead Epidemiologist from the University of Madrid.[0m”. [0m
After a brief round of applause from the audience attending the talk live, Dr. Harper leaned forward, his expression confident.
“[2;33mWell Murray, while viral infections can certainly grab headlines, they most certainly don’t keep me up at night.[0m”. Murray would let off a light laugh, tilting his head in curiosity.
“[2;33mAnd why is that, Doctor?[0m”. Harper continued his confident look, talking with confidence as not to be interrupted.
“[2;33mWe’ve made incredible strides in vaccines and treatments. Viruses come and go, and our immune systems adapt. No, I’m more concerned about antibiotic-resistant bacteria. I suppose that is what keeps me up at night.[0m”. Murray nodded, considering Harper’s confident statements.
Murray turned his attention to Dr. Neuman, offering a friendly smile.
“[2;33mAnd you, Dr. Neuman? I presume the prospect of a viral antibiotic-resistant pandemic keeps you up at night?[0m”.
Almost immediately, Neuman shook his head, his eyes intense; “[2;33mNo.[0m” he stated boldly.
“[2;33mNo?[0m” Harper asked, taken back by such a quick, yet simple response.
“[2;33mNo.[0m” Dr. Neuman reiterated.
“[2;33mAlright, well, that’s our show.[0m” Murray stated, causing a brief moment of laughter to erupt from the audience. After the audience quelled down, Murray rephrased their initial question.
“[2;33mWell just to be clear, you do think microorganisms pose a threat, yes?[0m”.
Dr. Neuman nodded his head, “[2;33mOh, in the most dire of terms. What I’m afraid of is not bacteria or viruses.[0m”.
Confused as to what he meant, Murray asked, “[2;33mThen what?[0m”.
“[2;33mFungus.[0m” Neuman stated, causing a murmur to roll through the crowd.
