- Knox County, Kentucky | July 1993
It started with a foul smell in the air, then phone lines inside Knox County were cut off suggesting authorities had prior knowledge of the impending disaster. The residents of Knox County, Kentucky didn't think too much of it writing it off as an unpleasant experience but no cause for concern. Little did they know the first wave of infection was approaching, with the help of its courier: the wind. The first strand was airborne and the danger of its miasma was impossible to predict. The symptoms for the first strand were nausea, followed by a high fever after two days, this fever kills its victim then brings it back to life in a zombified state in less than sixty seconds. These zombies spread the infection through the transmission of bodily fluids such as blood and saliva. As the inhabitants realized the gravity of their situation the government issued an evacuation of Knox County on the sixth of July and the area was sectioned off with blockades set up by military personnel, as the military establishes roadblock barricades around Knox County residents are turned away at gunpoint as hazmat teams move in, setting the stage for the quarantine of the infected zone.
This event was known as the Knox Evacuation. Despite some being reported having a special immunity to the airborne variant, very few are safe from the variant that is transmitted by bodily fluids. If bitten, you will turn into a zombie. Your death is a matter of time. Learning this three days into the event the residents of Kentucky are afflicted by mass hysteria. A picture of a blood-soaked man with an arm attached by mere tendrils also goes viral, increasing the fear of zombies in the community. Experiencing a heavy sense of dead, citizens loot stores in several major cities, prompting the response of the military, and some attempt to resist. In the guarded containment zones around the state, crowds begin to form, and the infection continues running rampant.

The hordes are piling up! The launch of our next story is tomorrow, get in now to get those characters ready before the opening of the Grand Ohio Mall.
July 15th 1993 | Louisville, Kentucky Grand Ohio Mall
On the morning of July 15th the city of Louisville has descended into complete chaos after hordes of the infected break through the quarantine line and begin attacking those inside. Those who were still trapped behind the boundary fences of the containment zone are stuck within the city and have been left to fend for themselves, as the military follows orders from their command to retreat back across the river. Many scramble to find any semblance of shelter that they may find. A few hours into the disarray survivors take the Louisville Mall and turn it into a safe haven for survivors using barricades and the shutters of the mall to keep out the dead. Over time more and more poor souls begin turning up at the mall while things on the outside continue to deteriorate. You're forced to watch as your world is flipped upside down.

- Knox County, Kentucky | Mid-July 1993
The last few days have not been easy for anyone, but those at the Grand Ohio Mall and small pockets of other survivors still trapped within Louisville are finding new ways to combat the infected every day. Some bold souls have already began braving the hordes of undead as they venture out beyond the safety of the barricaded mall to find precious resources so that those remaining at the location may stand a chance in the harsh times that were surely to follow, yes things were bad now but they could always be worse. This is proven on July 17th when General John McGrew changes tack, and urges the immune to fight.
“The time has come to bear arms against this threat. They may be your family, they may be your friends. Do not hesistate to pull the trigger. You have not been forgotten. We will come for you.”
After this and rephrased messages, NNR falls silent until it is picked up one last time by a priest who's eaten alive in the studio on air. It's rough.
After the broadcast many at the mall realize the gravity of the situation and begin pulling their weight more and more, within the building some have started moving out of the originally supplied tents and making their new roof more pleasant to live under, utilizing furniture and other items found around the place to create bunks and communal areas that make everything feel a little more like home. Others work on the barricades at the entrances of the mall to make comings and goings easier while maintaining the same level of security as before.
It was too early to really know, but things certainly were looking up for the inhabitants of the Grand Ohio Mall. At least for now...
- Knox County, Kentucky | End of July 1993
Nearly thirty days after the initial events of the outbreak the streets of Knox County, Kentucky have become completely overrun with hordes of the undead, and it's been assumed that the rest of the world soon will too, following one of the final broadcasts of the NNR Network on July 17th, "this is NNR The Knox Event infection is confirmed in the following locations. Louisville and surrounding area, Kentucky. Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. Norfolk, England. London, England. Newcastle, England. Mogadishu, Somalia - in Africa. Seoul, South Korea. Okinawa, Japan. The cause of the sudden spread is unknown."
As all hope is lost across the entire continent, those within Knox County are cut off from the outside world almost completely as news stations and radio shows go dark everywhere, building up tensions to an all time high. The only thing the survivors of Knox County could do was pray that General McGrew and his merry men would arrive to provide aid soon. Though now they could only rely on themselves. The Grand Ohio Mall was slowly growing within Louisville, survivors from all over continued spilling in with their own horror stories to tell. But in all that bleakness, there was still some hope to be found within the end of days, together.
After days of silence the radio begins to slowly come back to life, there are contorted voices on the public radio frequency as if someone is battling to get themselves heard on the air. Maybe they'll make an appearance sooner than later, but you wish you could understand what they were saying behind all that static, as you hear what sounds like the jingle of an old radio station come back to life, there's some muffled speaking... it brings you back to a calmer time when things weren't so doomed, and then-- it's gone as quickly as it arrived.
