A thousand logs doesn't even seem that bad considering how many cars you'd have to dismantle for the 2500 unusable metal bits...

I don't know about your loot settings, but each car tends to yield 5-10 of those in my game. A MINIMUM of 250 cars to dismantle. Plus the propane to actually do that. Unless you can refill tanks and torches at gas stations, which makes it slightly more feasible.

At about 10 seconds per car just to dismantle that's about 40 mins of non-stop dismantling of cars provided they're all in one place which is unlikely.
