Your bread and butter builds are gonna be;
Police Officer For Guns
Lumberjack for max axe dps
Park ranger if you want to fuck off into the forest
burger flipper for maintenance without paying for handy
Repairman for a spear build
Construction Worker for short blunt
Or burglar for help with getting cars when you're new
Negative traits are pretty simple, high thirst, slow healer, weak stomach, prone to illness, short sighted. These are all pretty much free points due to how the game works.
If you need more points try taking smoker, conspicuous, unlucky, underweight or thin skinned.
Traits to avoid are anything that lowers your fitness / strength since gaining back fitness takes forever, much longer than most new players are going to survive. Underweight is an exception to this, as you can pair it with athletic, effectively giving you 3 fitness for 4 points.
For good vanilla traits, Gymnast, Athletic, Strong and wakeful are all super strong. No need to take gymnast on police officers or burglars though.
Beyond that handy is good if you didn't take burger flipper/repairman and want to use spears or long blade. Hunter is good if you're a non police officer and want to take guns.
Weapon skills like brawler and baseball player are useful if your character doesnt have a starting weapon skill
Keen hearing is a very good trait for new players, but as you get better at the game you'll need it less and less
Brave, dexterous, Fast Learner, and cats eyes are all pretty good
If you want to level a specific crafting skill, it is generally recommended to take a starting rank in it, as that will boost your xp gains in that skill by 4x.
