In the wake of the Finnegan-Spencer scandal, protests have sprung up in every major city across the United States. Unprecedented advances in genetic mapping, editing, and improving the human condition are mired in accusations of unethical practices, nepotism, and naked political corruption.
Over the last week, Louisville has become a focal point for some of the fiercest protests. As the site of the first rollout of the newest genetic edit, Dermoxylar, it has drawn tens of thousands of people to the streets, bringing the city to a standstill as police struggle to keep order and politicians wring their hands.
The line between ‘protest’ and ‘riot’ is thin and murky. The line between ‘person’ and ‘monster’ even more so.
To the police in riot gear, no one is entirely sure when they stopped pushing back people and instead were fighting for their lives against the inhuman… things… that roam the streets. When did slogans turn to screams? In the battle of chaos versus order, chaos won.
That was a day ago. For whatever reason, you have ended up in one of two places: Louisville Airport, or the Louisville Bunker. Flights have been diverted; layovers landing and then outward travel cancelled. The airport staff have had little information and fewer reassurances as time has gone on, and the noise from the chaos outside has been growing. Meanwhile, at the bunker, citizens arrive to find the doors locked tight, and the occupants unsympathetic to the plight of those outside.
Local news stations have started to cover incidents of rioters going feral. Footage of a man with blood all over his mouth has been circulating; no one has yet dared say the word ‘zombie’. No coverage in the world will prepare you for what you will find outside.
