#Sky High

lets hope we get build 42 available near the end of this year of early 2024.
some day the indiestones will bring back bi weekly dev blogs.
I feel that we're gonna get bi-weekly blogs before the end of the year, but we won't get Build 42 until next year.
It sounded like they were putting biweekly blogs on hold because it was interfering with the game dev, and really which would you rather have
I think it would be wrong to say that the biweekly thursdoids were holding up development in any sense.
It was more of a case that now that we were pivoting to more focused animal/crafting/b42 development, which at this point has come to involve multiple parties working in concert for quality demonstrable results, that, for the time being, switching to a scheme temporarily where we present the concrete results generated in concert, will be more impactful and impressive?
Think of it like a jurassic park style situation, where we want to unveil one dinosaur a month for bit, for the sake of showmanship 🙂
At this point with the b42 development we've gone from being individual cheerleaders, to building human pyramids, so we gotta pace ourselves.
In that now we're not working on individual development streams, but the river.
That's a weird and unexpectedly poetic, yet oddly soulless and corporate answer
is the skyscraper gonna be located in LV?
I can already foresee a new challenge: the Skyscraper Challenge (creative name I know)
You have to survive in the tallest building in Louisville for as long as you can. No leaving allowed.
Nah. The challenge ought to be traveling up the 100-story zombie-infested skyscraper in minimum time.
i am the skihigh , ask questions
You don't actually have to fight all the enemies...

So living the… high life? 😏
Yes
I have only complaint with this blog though
I eventually ran out of blog to read
freeee bird
very hyped indeed! love the good work
I'm waiting for this update to drop tbh
bowyer?
is that just pottery
No. It means a person who makes bows and arrows.
Thursdoid: https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2022/08/slapdashdoid/
Hello all! Afraid this will be a more hastily put together than usual Thursdoid, usual Thursdoid writer is away this week, and we originally planned to do a stable release today. Last minute, however, literally a couple of hours ago in fact, we concluded that this would be a bad idea not only in the […]
Also, correction. I meant to say Stonecutter, not Brickmaker
Ugh! I can't wait for Build 42! Just looking at the Bowyer tree makes me so darn excited! We'll be making freaking Crossbows!
hopefully bows could also spawn naturally as well
also some makeshift bows out of tree branches.
That tech tree just blows me away. Can’t wait for B42
I trust TIS but I really hope they aren't over hyping all this
maybe it is US who are overhyping
Oh most certainly, but they're still telling us about the great and awesome stuff they're adding in 42
i mean it looks like they are imo lol
its not like its 10 items and calling it a day
we wont know until its released 🤷♂️
Technically a bowyer is someone who's profficient in making bows
A fletcher is someone who's profficient in making arrows, but anyone could be good at both
cant wait to find the recipe magazines to make these bows.
Whoopsies
Also there’s a lot of other stuff being added besides crafting
I mean, 2 years of development for an update should be enough for all they promised
It will be a very good update
New farming stuff
Hunting animals
Map expansion
Basements and hills
I will go back to hunter gatherer times and chase deer with spears
OH MY GOD
please add spear throwing
That becomes a viable survival method
Please
We already have bows and arrows I don’t think that’ll happen
Gwiddy
Dude think about it though, super inexpensive way to get a ranged weapon with no skill tree
But not very strong because its one spear per throw
Yeah their lies the problem lol
I’d rather spears be the way they are now but maybe with a durability buff
Still could be useful
I want pikes and medieval weapons
A halberd would be sick
I believe mods exist for that
Probably, but still would be nice to have in the base game.
True
I want to do a vanilla game soon. Played permafrost modded recently and it was tough, so maybe something more laid back would be enjoyable.
I doubt you’ll be getting that kind of thing
Maybe, with the new crafting system.
We’ll just have to wait until the update comes out and we can see the full crafting tree
A blacksmith might be a profession
I’m still hoping for ammo crafting with guns
They said they wanted to go towards a more medieval approach for late game, being able to be fully self-sufficient and everyone having their own role.
Yes.
Many things to look forward to beyond the crafting
I'd say it's going to be a very very large update
It expands on pretty much everything
- Ranching animals
- Combined with the crafting update, we're getting a professions rework and post-apoc professions
- A massive engine rebuild that consists of a lot of stuff
- Lighting rework
- Machines that can be interacted with more complexly (vending machines)
- Skyscrapers
- Fishing minigame
- Dynamic music depending on your current situation and actions
- A freaking massive boatload of new items, clothings, gear, containers, etc, especially military gear like webbing.
- More interactive player-readable documents like newspapers, advertisements, etc.
- Re-usable books with actual names.
- Reading rebalance (can't read in low-light, illiterate can read magazines but not map writing)
- Functional, craftable masks
- Facelift to some existing areas of the map
- More camping equipment like proper tents and backpacks that can hold tents.
- Complex liquid transfer system, which includes mixable paint.
- QoL improvements by adding more ways/alternatives to getting mandatory equipment like can openers, lighters, crafting magazines and sledgehammers.
Edit: I completely forgot about
- Voice acting!
But I don't think we're getting hills in Build 42.
I believe the potential was mentioned, but we haven't even gotten any updates on the Southward and Eastward staircases. They mentioned that they came to a solution, but we don't know what that solution was, since they haven't said anything for months.
I would imagine that they would at least show us what they've come up with at this point.
Especially since now they're starting to merge the major branches together.
The big map that they showed us probably contains most of what they had added until that point, and I don't recall seeing any hills. On the map, that would probably look like a blank spot on Level 0:
that map looks more exciting when there is more places to explore and more fishing spots
cant wait to use these new melee weapons like this metal baseball bat.
prison shank , L shaped tire iron
butterfly knife.
The metal baseball bat will be fun, although I assume no nails can be out on it
hopefully the metal baseball bat will be more durable than the wooden bat
I'm curious if we're gonna be able to use that tire iron to change tires.
more likely it could be used to change tires
Have they said B42 will add hills? I may have read that they plan to implement it, but was positive it'd be later.
cough minecraft cough
What if we could wrap it in barbed wire instead
Weld screws onto it
No, we're not going Negan
I think we are well past that point
Something that doesn't make much sense to me: that hook looks like it's gonna be a spear-type. But the point isn't outwards like a spear.
Regardless, the fire poke and baseball bat look like a two-handed weapon (likely long blades and long blunt respectively), tire iron looks like a one handed weapon (short blunt), and the knives are obviously short blades.
for the love of god indent your list
Indent deez nutz
farming overhaul is going to be amazing to be able to grow more types of crops as well as crops having defenses against pests
Better?
non flat terrain is a verrry far off goal, you can see it if you use the !roadmap command

Read about it in more detail more here:
https://projectzomboid.com/blog/news/2022/01/2022-and-beyond/
I don’t see it
Maybe I’m just crazy or interpreted things wrong
Wouldn’t be the first time this has happened 😏
Look. Just go back through the devlogs for the past 2 years and I'm sure you'll find it mentioned.
i seriously hope we will be able to make more furniture and stuff with this- and architecture
for example a windmill, or sprinklers for crops without the need for mods
solar panels
this is random but i also hope for a intercom in buildings, or some streets of lv
That'd be neat.
I think they showed a windmill in the teaser long ago when discussing the Build 42 and the post-apocalypse medieval world.
fr? never seen it
do u have a screenshot or know what thursdoid its in?
I don't think they had photovoltaic solar panels in the mid-90s
oh yeah true
Dude, it was a LONG time ago! I'd have to go REALLY far back
dont worry i believe u lmao
Actually, I tried looking back. Can't seem to find it. I seriously, legitimately, could've sworn that I saw a devlog with a makeshift windmill. Might've been more than 2 years ago.
Man imagine trying to clear out that entire skyscraper
Imagine being trapped in the skyscraper
Imagine being a janitor there (or a perfectionist like me)
What are we looking for? I recently looked through a bunch while searching for something, might've seen it but that doesn't sound familiar
Oh the windmill
Yeah. Don't you remember a picture in the blogs featuring a windmill?
Talking about something saying medieval post-apocalypse or something?
There were certainly blogs discussing medieval post-apocalypse, but I don't remember an image. I was focused on the text, though, so I very well may have missed it
2022 and Beyond. No image, and only phrased as a hypothetical:
Want to be the person who makes clothes and sells them to a neighbouring settlement? Build brick walls and create something that resembles an actual house? Maybe even build a windmill? Who knows.
@outer dome
Not even a video panning over a settlement with a windmill?
A video is certainly harder to confirm, but not in any of the ones related to “medieval” stuff (that I read), no
you guys ready for thursoid
aye aye captain
if we dont get the thursdoid this week more likely we could get this blog post next week
Won't that be next week?
Like, so far, it's always been the third Thursday of every month.
thats what i thought
Idk I just like antagonizing
Thursdoid Thursdoid Thursdoid
We can definitively assume: NO THURSDOID TODAY
:c
Because the last one was three weeks ago
doesnt feel like too long ago for some reason
maybe next week we could see a thursdoid
man do NOT jinx it 😭🙏🏼
are these the only tech trees we know of
To my knowledge
Bow crafting looks great, though some of the terminology is off. Arrows should require nocks and tips to be made seperately too if we're being proper realistic. Fletchings/vanes too
lets hope some bows will spawn naturally to make this game more immersive and some cheap makeshift bows to add to the immersion.
I also hope that arrows could be reused after reclaiming them from the zombie corpse.
need a dispenser here
maybe they could spawn on some survivor zeds later into the run
like a week or two into a run
that would be nice
I feel like a week or two is very soon for that, unless it's rare at that point
I doubt many people in 1993 Kentucky knew how to use a bow, much less how to make one
implement some hunting bows and crossbows that spawn naturally.
Bruh. A week or two?
This is the stuff we're gonna be investing in over the course of years!
doubt people play on a single save for a ingame year but sure,a few months seems more plausible
for them to start spawning in on survivor zeds
maybe a month for surivor zombies to spawn in
Mmm lootable arrows too. Preferably Carbon ones that cant be repaired if damaged.
loot arrows off of zombies that spawn with them.
could imagine a new type of injury of a lodged arrow removal in body.
Ouch. I imagine it something akin to getting glass lodged in your body. You'd need a bladed object or, preferably, a saw to reduce it to a "lodged arrow shaft" or "lodged arrow head" and then use tweezers to remove it, then treat it as a normal deep wound.
The actual method for arrow removal is to break the shaft in half without moving it too much, and then pushing the arrow out the other end of where you got hit
Though that depends on the arrowhead, but pulling an arrow out rather than pushing it out can cut you up inside even more
I wonder if health and damage have to be revamped alongside these new weapons. Getting hit with an arrow is a whole new way to be hurt
PVP was mentioned as something on their radar for improvement in 2022 and Beyond, but unsure whether we've seen anything else about it since
Imo the thing that needs revamping the most is zombie behaviour and senses
I'd love a more configurable day/night activity and a hot/cold activity setting
More vision settings like "Completely Blind" and something in between that and "Poor"
I got it! Let us use a scale to modify these values!
lactose intolerant trait be like
tbh
how do you do pvp combat exactly
since the game is balanced around smacking zombos, and due to the ""kinda"" realistic nature of the combat you cant really do much more
ig maybe they could add like
some way to dodge? not like dark souls style but rather like a small sidestep or step back that can scale and get better with more nimble, has a higher chance to avoid attacks and grabs but wont actually protect you from anything else
and also shields maybe, like protects from frontal attacks and grabs when aiming and pushing instead uses the shield which is more powerful
dodge? dodge bullets?
bruh im talking how you can just stunlock people to death
im talking how you can get an m14 and be unstoppable as long as someone doesnt shoot you from the back
which is a small if as long as you just stay inside a building
Here's my perspective:
PvP will likely be untouched until development fully shifts into Build 43, because B43 single-player will include combat with NPCs, and the issues with PvP combat will be prevalent in NPC combat if left unchanged. There will likely be rebalances around both ranged and melee combat to reduce stunlocking. Maybe only allow players to fall on the floor when you get a critical hit, and only if it hits their head, torso or legs.
Maybe even give a system so we can target specific body parts, in case we want to take people alive.
One thing that I'm hoping will be added is to make it possible for the player to fall unconscious from getting hit too much/hard in the head or blood loss, and enemies can then capture you. It'll also probably be a Sandbox option so that players in MP don't have to wait potentially a long amount of real-world time before they can resume playing.
Pvp will just be untouched
Well, for this update, yeah.
I doubt it’s ever gonna get much
I think it'll be improved but I have no idea when & feel no desire to make an estimate, personally
Maybe there will be some stuff with survivor updates but it’s not much of a focus in general
i hope animals can bite you so when the update comes out, abunch of people in multiplayer get attacked because they got medical checked and assumed to be zombified
they've already mentioned that they're working on it
The roadmap post only mentioned “needing to” work on it (under the build 42 heading, but not a certain statement)—have they mentioned it on discord or smth
yeah, a while back
that's cool and all but...
i just want the build limit to be increased like immediately
like right now... i cant wait
Good thing b42 is releasing in 5 minutes
You mean to say y'all haven't updated your copies yet?
What other post-apoc professions do you guys predict? We're gonna get bowyers and stonecutters.
- Maybe soldiers, where they'll have more experience with a variety of melee.
- Survivalists that can camp out in the woods. Heck, maybe a job similar to that called "Wanderer" or "Traveler," as a person who goes from place to place.
- Burglars might be replaced with Bandits, with better combat skills.
- Raider could be a variation of the bandit with much higher combat ability.
- Blacksmith is probably coming back.
- Potter might become a profession for all the new pottery stuff.
Likely keep fishers, farmers, cooks, doctors, engineers and carpenters and such.
We'll likely lose things like mechanic, police officer, fire fighter, veteran, security guard, park ranger, fitness instructor and burger flipper.
Why would they remove those professions
Veteran should not even be an occuption since you are not active in the military.
Soldier would be more logical as a occupation.
Do you realize how stupid of a sentence this is
are you trolling?
I’m not
The whole point of veteran is that they aren’t in the military anymore
If you are active in the military you aren’t a veteran
Wouldn't the logical thing for that veteran to be working a different occupation?
Why would there be people with "burger flipper" occupation 10 years after the collapse of modern society?
reread what I said
whatever skills you get will go to the new crafting stuff
thats what was said in previous thursoids
also im sure they will need someone to grill meat in the future 😏
bad wording on my part but none the les
they wont be removing anything im sure
I'm more interested in seeing how affinities are implemented
as a single player i know im making them all available
personally id rather not have any affinity
I don't know what your relationship status has to do with anything
Fair though, I think it'll be v cool with NPCs
ouch man ouch
If you set it up I'm contractually obligated to knock it down 😔
lol
More like "military reservist"
Cause an active-duty soldier would likely sit in Fort Knox
it would be nice to have more types of occupations in the game to add more logic.
Yes
Paramedic would be nice occupation to have
I think police officer should deserve some short blunt skill since they do use nightsticks or batons.
Prison guard.
But then B42 is adding SWAT gear and vehicle so who knows
not sure how many people call firefighters as "Fire officer".
imagine some useless occupations like cashier , taxi driver, office worker.
Court judge occupation " I hold you undead in contempt of court"
Yeah the entire "occupations" idea is very prone to leaving a lot of professions out
Attorney occupation
I don't think that would be too different from nurse.
Yeah, most people would have jobs that don't contribute to zombie-apocalypse survival, but realistically, wouldn't have the extra time to have 8 free trait points
Maybe we could add in challenge occupations, which don't have any skill bonuses/affinities and increasingly fewer points compared to Unemployed, to zero free points, to potentially negative points.
Their only purpose would be to let players roleplay or take on extra challenges.
Sewer dweller:
- Spawn in sewers (with the addition of basements of course)
- can see better in the dark
- aren’t affected when wet
- +1 sneak
as an IRL sewer dweller, this is accurate and represents me
man those guys probably start with -1 sneak
I do alert some keemstars in the sewers ngl
i meant that obese people would likely be easier to spot
than skinny ones
but thats likely just me
Sewer dweller does not imply obese
& I don't think overweight people would necessarily be easier for zombies to spot by virtue of being overweight, unless you're literally talking about the visibility of their body (for which the same concern would apply for tall people)
imagine being a really short and thin person as the meta for stealth builds lol
Im of the opinion that zeds should be far less likely to notice you visibly when sneaking at a distance than they currently are. Not because crouching makes you hard to see, it doesn't really. Purely because when moving slowly you are really almost indistinguishable from one of their fellow undead unless you are close enough for them to smell something to the contrary. Zeds should only start doing heavy checks when something piques their interest e.g. they notice sudden movements that are not typically zombie like, or smell living flesh in close proximity. Its frustrating being spotted from a distance when you are acting no differently to the others zeds around
I mean it makes sense that's how guns work
It's just whoever shoots first
But when it's hardly skill-based (i.e., you just click in their general direction) I assume it makes PVP not all that compelling
I say I assume because I personally avoid pvp
The games design itself doesn't really accommodate for that
Which is presumably why PVP is slated for eventual improvement
One person's inability to think of a solution doesn't mean a solution doesn't exist lol
In this case a solution would probably radically change the main focus
There's not really a big point in changing the entire game around smth people don't exactly do
At most ig bullets can have a lower hit chance on humans so you need to be closer and it doesn't stunlock?
You can't really do much beyond that without changing the pve mechanics
The fact of the matter is that we don't know how—or when, even—PVP will be improved, because the only information we have is that it's something they know needs improvement
It's not really possible to say whether that improvement would be a radical change
True for all we know it might not even be changed
Yeah, my guess is not anytime soon since it hasn't been mentioned in recent blogs (but I'd be pleasantly surprised to see it)
I think their focus is going to be pve
Although perhaps what they can do for npcs will also be reflected in pvp
Unless they magically implement a way to rotate the camera (which would fuck 2D sprites over hard) there's kind of massive blind-spots for people approaching a building that campers can employ to get that initial jump needed to secure victory
That camera-viewport limitation will always put PvP firmly into "kusoge" territory of PvP games.
"kusoge" means "crap game" but there is also less of a negative connotation than you would believe based on that translation. There are games that are decently popular that lean hard into it and let players ride the highs of playing a ridiculous game.
CRAFTABLE SLEDGEHAMMERS INBOUND
#tweets message
cartable crowbars would be nice to have as well
Oh shit
This guy has the right idea
Also I assume we will need metalsmithing or something to make stuff
Now we just need proper ammo crafting
something realistic would be nice, but idk
wdym realistic that is realistic
Oh I was talking to myself
Cuz like most of the mods available for ammo craft Either aren’t updated lately or are too simple
Hmmm
The idea is cool but the katana and machete being craftable might throw balance off
Blacksmithing might come back.
We'll probably be making moulds, furnaces for melting metal, pouring the molten metal into those moulds, and finally making new components!
Choose the new profession 'landlord' and start the game with no skills.
Food for the proles
Oh I figure as much
lets hope we could mine for some ore to produce some metal for black smithing
Which some have complained about lol
“Game becomes too much like Minecraft and Factorio”
There’s always the concern of making the game too easy with craftable sledges. But I often wonder if that was said before vehicles were added
After all, you might need to be a metal smith and require an anvil or some shit
I mean if it requires a high metalworking then it’s gonna be tough to get
And easier to hope it just drops
My guess is that you're gonna need some hard-to-find metals to craft a one, or sledges are gonna need a LOT of metal. Crafted sledgehammers will also probably have much lower durability than a professionally made one, or one made by someone with high blacksmithing stats.
I don’t think crafting will affect balance, not even with craftable katanas or sledgehammer. Based on the sample tech tree they shared for bows, the effort required to get the infrastructure to make advanced items will be so high, that you’ll more than earn those items if you can make them
Still hoping sometime for an official horde attacks your base setting
If only to actually put all those traps and defenses you spent so much time building to use.
Yes
Seconding the "Not likely to affect balance" since manually crafting a sledgehammer sounds like it will require far more scrounging for specific materials than just finding the damn thing. They're not that rare.
Like I would bet that 1% or less solo runs end up crafting their own sledgehammers before finding their first one.
But hopefully, the new local business heavy-duty trucks, like that of Penn S. Hamm Construction, will have good odds for a Sledgehammer and other tools.
They could probably require maxed out skills to be as good as the ones you find
And without that they have exceedingly worse quality
We shall see
That's how I would balance it.
Yeah Same
Plus, it's gonna need skills in two areas, both Carpentry and Metalsmithing/Blacksmithing. One to make the handle, one to make the head. It's gonna be difficult for one person to even do that!
If they will add the degradation when we use the sledgehammer or an hammer there is a purpose to craft one and plus i think thise enormous craft's tree is mostly about multi than single cause they have expectations of servers running for 100 years I don't think solo players will play for 100 years
watch me
Dying of old age will be winning the game 🪦
Lmao. Imagine they add aging to the game. Have MP servers running for several in-game decades until all your characters slowly kick the bucket.
This is how you died
Surrounded by loved ones at your death bed
Uhhh...#deathgoals?
Also, I'm hyped for the Thursdoid tomorrow!!!
Nahhhhh it’ll never happen
this is the 3rd week of this month we could have a dev blog.
I petition Indie Stone to make a Fridroid for maximum chaos
The chaos comes from the extra r
some day we will have bi weekly blog posts again.
Not unsolveable though. Its a problem with PvE too. Just gotta make the cut away happen when you position your aim cursor over the obscured area (given that the far side of the building is inside your FoV)

Hopefully new Thrusdoid tomorrow. Has almost been 30 days. 🤞
Thrusdoid today? I would just like confirmation if there will be one or not 😵💫
real
im sure nasKo will answer at some point today
but yes it should be today since the last one was on the 21st last month
Turdsdoid
Annoying how they seem to release Thursdoids around 1pm here. Just be normal and have it there when I wake up!
animal poop be like
if the thursdoid does not happen this week we could see the thursdoid next week since this will be the final Thursday of this month.
Nothin yet
must be a late one.
Usually it's around 1pm west coast time for me. (I know because they always release it just as my break is ending.)
I think it must be a next week one
The last one was posted 2 hours from now (on the day it was posted, I mean)—it very well could still be today. Just have to wait n see
Dev dairy 😋
I guess by the time I get back from doing actual work at my job this will be a dead thread
Here’s hoping this next thursoid is a good un
See you on the other side 🥲
We'll have a reunion on this thread in 67 days when B42 comes out
Ice Cream crafting expansion confirmed!
Obviously
i wanna see ragdoll physics 😛
Imagine the 3D layer rendering thing gets used to for physics and collisions lol
slamming zeds into walls and street lamps will be funny.
MAN, WHERES THE THURSDOID?!
I'm tweaking out mannnn....
