Eleven years ago, the world faced a devastating viral outbreak of unprecedented magnitude, eclipsing any plague or pathogen that had ever afflicted humanity before. This calamity sent shockwaves of fear and despair throughout the global populace, leading to the eventual collapse of numerous smaller governments, unable to bear the crushing burden it imposed.

Fast forward five years, and the United States found itself at the edge of annihilation. In a desperate bid to combat the impending apocalypse, they established the World Catastrophe Killzone Department (WCKD). This newly formed entity was born from the realization that the conventional structures of power were woefully inadequate to confront the looming catastrophe. Barely a month after its inception, the US Government conceded executive authority to the WCKD, relinquishing control and entrusting them with the nation's remaining resources.

Amidst this backdrop of global chaos and crumbling societies, a sinister new menace emerged. Infected individuals began undergoing a horrifying transformation, turning into mindless husks driven by a singular, insatiable urge: to propagate the virus through any means necessary. Moreover, certain regions of the world exhibited ominous signs of an airborne variant of the virus, instigating the final descent of civilization. In the absence of formidable fortifications and vigilant sentinels, areas lacking high walls and ubiquitous security were decimated within a matter of weeks..

Meanwhile, WCKD, arguably one of the most formidable and enduring factions still standing, initiated a series of enigmatic trials known as the Carcer Trials. These trials involved the meticulous selection of individuals possessing specific qualities, whose destinies were sealed as they were dispatched into the sealed-off confines of Knox County. This enclave harbored a milder strain of the virus, which induced amnesia in its victims, erasing much of their past while preserving fragments of their memories and skills through visions in order to help them survive. This process was conducted with the aim of unraveling the mystery behind the immunity of these chosen few to the effects of the airborne virus, holding the tantalizing promise of discovering a cure capable of emancipating humanity from the relentless horrors that had befallen them. But these people where immune to the airborne virus.. but not to any bite from the infected.
