It stays in seperate pieces and isnt turning into one couch.

You need to hold both pieces in your inventory at the same time, then use the place tool

#

(place tool is right above the magnifying glass)

If you really need to you can pick it up in you primary and secondary hand then unequip them and carry it a lot further
