#Sudoku Dual-Notation and Coloring Option

I do wonder if this is more niche to the variant Sudoku community, but I'm very used to the notation options available in, for example, SudokuPad and the Cracking the Cryptic Sudoku apps. Specifically, there's a "dual marking" mode that allows for both corner marks and center marks. Plus, the app supports coloring of cells with a nice palette of colors. I'm used to solving this way, though it is fairly unique to these apps and would likely be a default-off setting to enable the dual-marking and coloring.

Screenshot is from SudokuPad, where the left cell is only corner-marked, and the right cell is colored yellow and has both corner and center marks.

ok, I think my sudoku skills aren't quite enough for this one. Could someone help me out here - why would you need both corner and center markings? 🤔 Is it just a way to better organize your notes, or maybe highlight the numbers you're more confident about?

It's to assist with so-called "Snyder notation" where you want to mark both where a digit can be in a box as well as what an individual cell has remaining as candidates. Note that this was mostly invented by Cracking the Cryptic and was loosely inspired by Thomas Snyder's paper notation style. I go over my notation style and other strategies in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=al962DWE1S0

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain Heart I'll have a look. I've heard about the term before (and from TS, actually!) but didn't know what it meant until now

I met Thomas at SudokuCon and we had a discussion about how this style doesn't really match his notation style, but the name has stuck regardless

I like and teach how to provide center and corner notation on my channel. From my research on sudoku apps, only Sven’s SudokuPad and the Cracking The Cryptic puzzle packs offer this ability. Most only allow corner marks.

thank you both, super helpful 🙏 I'll bring that up with the team and see how they feel about it

To jump on this as well, I cannot tell the difference between my corner marks and central marks when there's only one type so I have to just mark the entire grid to be sure I don't mistake one for the other.
