Disclaimer
I AM a member of the lore team but the stuff in this post hasnt been peer-reviewed so take it as dubiously cannon.

Im making a little in-universe write-up about xenoarcheology and i want some community feedback, what do you think all of the artifacts intended uses are and who do you think made em?

#

ive split them into 6 classes;
Monolithic
Esoteric
Organic
Metallic
Crystaline
Strange

#

monolithic is the top row minus the two outliers, esoteric is the second, organic is the third, metallic is the fourth, crystaline is the fifth, and strange is the two weird ones that dont have groups

well, going by what i know they're referencing and what the originals were classified/labelled as.

  • First row i'm not quite sure what they're referencing. But it's definitely something mechanical, silicon-based or robotic going by their original names.
  • the 2nd row can be argued to be a Metroid reference. But their original labelling calls them eldritch
  • 3rd row: is definitely organic, probably some reference to a niche point and click game. Original labelling calls them martian.
  • 4rd row: Star Control reference. Original labelling calls them Precursors.
  • 5th row: More of a fantasy style rather than a reference. Original labelling ties into the wizard antag.
#

with the 5th one i like to think NT propagated that wizard federation magic has been "mostly debunked" but scientists are still trying to reverse engineer the wizard crystal artifacts so it's still an open question.

like it's one thing to master bluespace to the point you can do magic, but the wizards have taken it a step further and are larping as magicians with said bluespace mastery...or are they?

#

as for who i think made them...
first row? From some ancient machines with a shared hivemind.
2nd? Forgotten eldritch cult artifacts
3rd? ancient bio-mechanical based polity
4th? ancient/precursor polity that's older than anything else
5th? probably old magi-tech that contributed to the continuation of the wizard federation.

Monolithic would suggest that these are related to The Monolith, either originally from it (like fragments?) or else are simply objects left from the same civilization that created it.

they do look like greebled versions of the Space Odyssey monoliths

my viewpoint on it is that the "xenoarc" we do in game is mostly about figuring out wtf artifacts do when theyre broken, and all of the artifacts have real original purposes that arent just "input X: output Y" effects

#

so like...

#

this is obviously a gun? right? isnt there a mob that uses this as a gun?

onyx garnet
#

could've originally been a fancy welding tool for all we know

#

or a really really good camera

#

im like 90% theres an unused mob with one of these as a laser cannon

Third row Organics:
Could litteraly be organic forms twisted beyond all comprehension by effects of X,Y,Z.. Monolith or space radiation.. or ... FTL travel failing...

#

Its basically organic life or parts of it that gained powers beyond that we deem possible

#

Crystalline can simply be another attempt at mimicking Monolith, another civilization with a different approach and technology

#

Mechanical is just self explanatory to me..
A civilization before us made machines.. we now go trough trials and error processes to figure out what they do
