Something like a master server computer? Maybe just a UI on the server itself, basically all new machinery must be approved on the server they are trying to link with to be linked... Or a better mechanic where we can safely exist and not have all R&D points of a faction base passively generated to do their faction research stolen by a dude who spent 10k research points on a disk printer and stealing all of it.
