I'm not sure it's disdain for GBA music so much as it is the sound quality itself being too far removed from what future platforms could pull out in comparison that it was more worth it to refresh and update the songs.

If you were to put it more bluntly, the sound quality on the GBA was ass. To get a good soundtrack on that platform is real difficult, and that's why I think Motoi Sakuraba was one of the best on that platform, IMO - Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and both Golden Sun games.

Hell, in the case of Mario Kart, even songs seemingly reused from the originals are redone with updated samples and instrumentation in games like Mario Kart 7 - DS Palm Shore comes to mind here, as well as SNES Rainbow Road.

hey i can give you some fun information on why nintendo probably doesnt like the GBA’s sound !

GBA music is primarily done with a super gimped and fucked up MIDI driver playing in combination with the original Game Boy’s two pulse channels, wavetable channel, and noise channel.

The problem with the GBA lied with most developers seeing an option for “sample based audio” and immediately switching to that, probably making the concession for the dogshit (very professional but its accurate) quality in favor of having music similar to the SNES’ arguably much better Sony SPC700 audio chip.

In my personal opinion, I have zero fucking idea why Nintendo went for the sample based MIDI driver rather than an FM Synthesis MIDI driver (similar to the OPL3 sound chip of the late SoundBlaster PC sound cards of the 90s), which would have been far more portable and sounded a whole lot better than what we got, but presumably Nintendo was allergic to having their console “sound like a Sega console”, as those FM-based soundcards typically tended to be described as such.

Another issue lies with the GBA’s speakers themselves, which were pretty abysmal quality anyway.

Honestly I’m surprised it took Nintendo as long as they did to say “we need a new handheld” when the GBA sounded (and often just played and operated in general) the way it did

I like how the GC ost uses the remake naming scheme so this title in particular doesn't really make sense bc it's just the battle theme for every chapter

SPM’s issue from what I heard is that all the songs are stored at like double speed and slowed down when played in game or something to that effect
