The Extra mode Magolor Soul description and the Triple Deluxe miiverse post said that the Crown took control of Magolor because Kirby broke it
And the True Arena Magolor Soul description says the crown grants power but consumes the soul, but it's not clear whether it always does that or is just doing that now because it malfunctioned.
So yea actually I think the crown normally just gives you evil thoughts kinda like the dimension mirror, but Kirby broke it and made it just straight up possess Magolor instead||
