I think people might want to check out Andy's (spoiler free) review on the movie. The film definitely has some problems and I don't want to write off negative complaints in regards to characterization but also he made a point that reminded me of another criticism involving the first film that I just don't give a damn about:

The filmmakers expect that most of those sat in the cinema recognise the characters and aren’t bothered about what Lumas are, or why they can spawn star-shaped booster rings. Instead, Illumination embraces the dazzling audio-visual spectacle of the Galaxy series (plus other more recent games in the series) with minimal exposition getting in the way.

I'm not saying they shouldn't go for more rich narratives or character exploration, but these movies should never waste time having some weird lore on launch stars or power ups or whatever mechanics that get adapted on screen. I remember that the critics actually complained about why Mario can just get power ups without any explict explaination/reason given. This might explain why film critics who have no idea of what the hell this series is might feel alienated.

||Man I loved this movie, it’s not perfect but all my negative thoughts are heavily outweighed by my positives. This movie looks so great and had so much love and effort into it. Star Fox was really cool especially the anime part, we got dry bowser Mr game and watch DAISY. It was really sweat and nice and full of fun references. Yeah sure it have had a better pace or been more long or have more depth but overall it was great||

It ultimately gave Peach the idea of where they needed to go next. I just am not sure what connection Wart and Jr had was ||

overall thoughts of the movie (but I liked it less than I expected). spoilers for everything:

||this movie is sort of a disappointment but not bad. but like it was the most "lol random" movie I've ever watched in forever. it starts actually well: jr captures rosalina and her introduction is good, yoshi is introduced and then there's peach and some hint of her story being developed. so far so good! then the movie becomes a... "omg can you guess this reference????" over and over. like it feels so incoherent and the scenes don't connect. like peach and toad find wart due to toad's stolen bag, but then peach randomly accuses him of knowing where rosalina is??? is that because he has "bad guy" vibes??? rosalina also barely appears, which was disappointing. they trick you into thinking bowser will have an arc, then "lol nope he evil". also why was honey queen in the movie LOL. the thing with peach and rosalina being sisters is fine and cute, but then her backstory is just thrown as "child of the stars with power of the cosmos" or whatever, I get rosalina but where does peach fit. and with daisy existing too it's even more confusing. I get people will say "it doesn't have to be properly explained to make sense!" and I agree, I just feel this movie in particular after the first 20-30 minutes goes over and over "don't think too hard about this" or "don't question this, this is for the reference to work". literally, fox being in the movie is so random, but it's so absurd that I care less than other things 😭 ||

I think I like the first movie more, and even then, I'm excited for the future anyway. post credits ||fox being from another universe, and being introduced about it in a different artstyle opens up smash bros stuff for me. zelda live action can also tie I bet. star fox movie may be interesting if happens. and my daisy bias will make me like a third movie way more for sure, I hope they do her justice, and not do like rosalina that barely has screentime, at least her first scene was awesome though||
