The first movie, while having various traits from other games, seems to mainly be built on a lot of the “origin” games

Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros, Wrecking Crew

And some Mario Kart in there too because why not

Similarly the structure of this second movie seems to be built on Galaxy (obviously), Super Mario Bros 2, and Yoshi’s Island

The latter two being “sequel” games
