The fact that it's a dry bones also adds up to the comedy effect because it feels incredibly out of the character we're used to in the games

wow.
idk how everyone else feels, but I loved it. Very faithful to the source material
just seeing the whole Mario world in a film feels so surreal but I'm all for it
Chris Pratt did a good Mario. I wasn't actively noticing it much if at all, so that's a big W

i'll admit in movie form this is not something as groundbreaking in terms of story
but man, the fact the world itself was adapted proper, the one thing that always has to reach a compromise when bringing a game into film (make it like earth, keep it relatable, the fantasy world is too expensive, make that look as down to earth as possible)

none of that here

even the parts in brooklyn have as much visual charm as the mushroom kingdom

this movie might be more basic plotwise, but even if it wouldn't do much for adult audiences expecting a more ambitious story, this will make the childhoods of many be great

I already am wishing this came out when I was a kid lol, it feels good having a more sincere fairytale rather than something that subverts every trope known to man

Meanwhile something like the mario movie is designed more like a classic disney film would be, like 5-10 in range, since their goal was straight up making it accessible to any mario fan, I think it had a bit of right that it's hard to hold their attention for so long

Like sure, it sucks the movie wasn't as long as it could have been, maybe 10 or 20 minutes more could have helped, but if it means making sure more children can watch the whole thing while paying attention, then I think it achieved its goal

And like, don't lie, exposition talk was super fucking boring to hear at that age lol

I think the movie conveys every bit of worldbuilding and exposition well enough with visuals, it's simple but there's more if you zoom in

Tbh i think another factor on not making the runtime super long is because the parents paying for their kids might not want to sit through a movie that long

And like, I feel people online overestimate the attention span of the average child, of course we adults throwing those critiques can sit through far longer movies nowadays, but I sure as hell remember as a kid getting bored if the movie was feeling too long

Like I still don't think it was a wrong move to trim it shorter than 90 minutes if it means the average 6 year old watching has a better chance of enjoying the film

I'd gladly get mad if it were other animated movie that got this treatment, but given how super accesible this film is in target audience, I feel that keeping it on the shorter side was a right choice

Like if anything, this might be somebody's first ever movie they ever watch, I think that's more important than keeping it longer

That said, mario movie 2 should absolutely be longer and more elaborate, this movie gets a pass for being an entry point, the sequel should definitely improve upon the experience
