You can even further break this down off the tap effect. Coolness is your reference formula, seeing as how the tap effect only checks for how cool you are, we can then assume that coolness is (Cool * Ness = 0) (this would be your reference formula for this problem) then you have the trigger effect of anytime a creature with haste or flying attack is equivalent to Cooler = (Cool * er) + 20% per trigger activation. Based on this we can not rule out Cool = 0, but we can assume Coolness and Cooler being 2 completely different variables not codependent on one another.

I mean the easiest answer to why it works is that coolness is measured in %, so saying youre 20% cooler can clearly be understood as +20% coolness

Its rare that a metric is measured in % of something, but when it is you can use it as an absolute value
