At a point in the middle of the day, my customers stopped getting cashed out at the register and I could see green cash register symbols above the customer's heads. What would cause that to happen?

They can't find a place to line up. Eitehr something is blocking their path or too many people are in line

okay - that would explain the customers not getting in line, but why does the cash register stop at that exact time? I can see customers being mad about not finding a place to get in line, but stopping the register is just extra cruel.
I was able to get the line moving again by removing and re-placing the register. At least I have a way to get it moving again.
