I dread the idea of going to war with AI knowing that unless at least 2 are on your good side, the rest will be dragged in against you.

I get that we're supposed to try to make friends with as many of them as possible to avoid the liability, but in the current state of diplomacy, where allies conveniently press their new friends to fight against you, it makes the prospect of engagement with them tedious and distracting.

Even if this is something that may not be easily corrected, my only other grievance related to war is 'fixing the state of things' by returning conquered settlements to neighbors who lost them to the local bully.

Personally, I can understand that if I declare war on a leader, his allies will declare war on me, but the fact that allies are conditioned to go to war just because their ally decided to declare war on me (even though we both get along) to maintain their alliance doesn't convince me...

And yes, I would very much like to be able to return settlements to their original owners or revive City-States.
