You know how it progresses the age when you do things in the legacy paths like slotting codexes? When you get to a certain number it gives you a little milestone that advances the age, but this leads to the problem of players waiting to cash in their treasure fleets ( for example ) until the age. In my opinion, this is a bad design and should not exist. I do like it giving certain points but advancing the age rewards players for holding off till the end of the age to do certain actions. This is an obvious problem with the exploration economic path. I don't think it

Yep, the game creates weird incentives to play in a very gamey fashion around the end of the era. I'm not sure how you'd fix it though other than a static timer or maybe locking the remaining turns at 70% of era (far enough from era completion that gaming your exact timing is hard to predict)
