After a midnight launch, I jumped into Civ 7 on PS5. My first game was on my Portal, primarily to test UI scaling on the smaller screen. And… call me a noob, but I spent a good minute on the brightness settings screen just trying to figure out which element was actually active. The UI gave almost zero visual feedback. On console there is no mouse cursor so how else do we know 'where are we?'
The entire UI suffers from a severe lack of contrast. It's incredibly difficult to identify selected UI elements, like checkboxes . The pointer/cursor/selection indicator (whatever it's called on console) is so dim, it's practically invisible. The technology and civic trees have the same selection problem - impossible to tell at a glance what's selected.
The game also doesn't remember settings. I have to turn on the yield lens every single time I start a new game.
Readability is a major issue. The tooltip descriptions, without upscaling, were unreadable on the Portal, and even on my large TV, the default text size is far too small.
A couple of specific requests:
Please make the R1 ribbon menu prompt (notch) hideable. It's not present on PC, and it clutters the top bar unnecessarily. The tutorial explains how to open the radial menu – I don't need a constant visual reminder taking up half the top bar.
Move/adjust the R3 helper button's tooltip. It's massive, ugly, and constantly shifts to the center of the screen, obscuring tiles I'm trying to interact with. Also I had instances when tooltips would get stuck, rendering Gwendoline's quotes completely unreadable.
Finally, not a bug, but feedback: Gwendoline should have a more significant presence. More voiceovers, like reading the intro text on the loading screen, would be greatly appreciated. The game feels too silent.
