Someone that actually cares has to make a PR

Adding flags especially to identify them clearly... The Foreign Legion remains an acceptable name, that said, historically it's almost okay.

If needed, I can find some flags for real countries, including the Foreign Legion, which has its own standard.
For baguettes, sardines, and the like, I'll leave pixel art to you.

#

To explain, the Foreign Legion was created in 1831 by King Louis-Philippe I for use in Algeria.

Rather Kabyle or Berber than Algeria then? Since you want to put Tlemcen (which is a commune in Algeria).

If we take into account that "monk" is Tunisia, we should place Berbers a little lower on the eastern part?

why not

This is so surreal, to see so much conversation of some choices I made two weeks ago at like 3am. I had no idea.

Regarding Map balance( vis-a-vis placement), I'm not sure I fully agree with your assessments, but I'm certainly open to them. I'm waiting to see this map in normal rotation lobbies.

Regarding the 'meme' bots, as long as its up to me they stay. You'll find of them on all the maps I've done besides Africa (which I've been meaning to get back to). Consider them easter eggs. Besides @N0ur s already done some great work making flags for for Sardines, Baguettes, the Old Ones, Santa Claus, Polar Bears, and Frost Giants, and I'll be damned before see those go to waste.

Seville I think is actually misplaced, but it could also be the bot's own placement logic, I need to revisit.

The Old Ones actual identity should be easily identified by their flag

Now these I may actually use on a map soon. I switched all the Nation bots to their 'Official' names on the Europe revision, and considered using the names they use for themselves as well/instead, but ultimately to save that for another time. Perhaps a different map set in this region that draws more on a specific period for flavor.

Catalan → Catalunya
The Basque → Euskal Herria

#

South America is also getting three 'meme' bots but If you want to know what they are, go play the map in .Dev or wait for it to arrive.

#

I recycled Polar Bears in Europe, which obviously won't stand. Though I'm tempted to instead change all the country names to reflect them as they were in 1985 (West/East Germany, USSR, etc.)

#

Its also worth mentioning that Tunisia appears in Mena, Africa, World, and Europe.

#

sometimes some variety is nice, expecially with so many maps with overlapping territoritory.

Like I think Anatolia currently appears in 7 maps. I think Turkiye appears in 5 of them

#

maybe 6

#

The jesuit monks I'll grant you, they're only there because of a vague memory of a french movie about some jesuit monks in Algeria I had while making the json

#

I leave it to you to decide the most fitting name, I'll submit the PR

Anti-pope to Avignon makes sense to me and Jesuit Monks should also be changed (suggest something appropriate for that approx placement other than Algeria or Tunisia. Maybe Moors, Almohad, something).

Yea I think 3 or 4 is about what I'm aiming for per map. French Foreign Legion I justify keeping because of our heavily french playerbase. They the majority so they get some extra bones (but no outright colonial states, at least not on this map). Honestly Baguettes and Wine were supposed to be Cigarettes and Riots, but I figured thats a little too controversial for this community (though I mean them with great affection as a man who wants nothing than to smoke again, and frankly, riot).

The old ones is too good a double reference to change.

The Sardines are my favorite and I won't let anyone hurt them.

Honestly I need to refresh the rivers on this map as I've redrawn them on the basemap since this was cut, and once I get some balance/performance feedback from it going to prod I'll do so. I'll likely add a few more nation bots to the empty areas when I do. As of what's currently in Main, in v0.21 this will be the single largest map by pixel count.

Beyond that, yea, 3 to 4 is about is much as I'm aiming for.

#

That would make a good map, but I want to do some maps other than Europe for a little bit. Lets check back on this idea in 2-3 weeks

#

diacriticals weren't rendering for me when I tried to use one for Republic of Turkiye (there's supposed to be one over the U).

But yes lines do need to be drawn intelligibility purposes but there isn't any clear way to do that without arbitrarily decreeing that some languages are too wierd, which is extra arbitrary when they use the same (more or less alphabet). Too tricky, thats why I didn't do it before.

Shit mate, everyone was doing awful shit in the 19th century. The FFL is a still extant military unit, with a decorated combat history, and if any unit was going to go off and forge a bloody warlordship in the Mountains of North Africa amongst the ruins of Nuclear war, the FFL are not a bad bet to be that unit.

#

Lol

#

tbf, it's a relatively oblique reference to both targets, but a clear one. Let it be a signpost pointing to hidden, useless, knowledge, though perhaps none may tell the way it points

#

Best of all about the FFL, it's mostly not even Frenchmen, it's all multicultural, multiethnic, force composed of men from all walls of life and nationalities for a singular purpose, Citizenship and adventure in exchange for doing the bloody bits of the business of France's imperial or Great Power exertions.

It's a force that does something everyone can hate and embrace. They're the perfect controversial choice

"Honestly Baguettes and Wine were supposed to be Cigarettes and Riots"
As a French I like this, Cigarette can be appropriate, but we are definitively in Riots
