Items disappearing after freeze

I took all of our money (6000+ piastres) out of our chest and fast travelled to Tortuga. My game froze during the black screen. It does that sometimes. Sometimes it unfreezes itself after a good minute, sometimes it never does and I have to force quit. This was one of the latter. When I loaded the world again, I was in Tortuga with no money on me, and none in the chest back home. I'm crushed.
