In a fight, the loot that is dropped by the enemy, is looted by pressing space and then is opening another window!
I would say that this is not beneficial as it can affect your time in battle! By simpli pressing space should be enough to loot directly into your inventory or your ship so the battle screen is not affected while looting, same as the barrels are found random on the sea!
