I cant open the game, was playing fine till 2 AM last night, tried to launch it this morning and it just loads, forever - I've left it for 60 minutes and the game wont load the main menu, I've checked other posts and asked in the support channel and tried the video, deleted local saves etc, my steam files only show one account, and the character files are fine as I have 3 characters

I've disabled the Steam cloud sync and tried to launch after deleting "SavedFiles" and it still doesnt launch to main menu, let alone show any of my characters, please help

you can do this method or use a save repair toolkit on Nexusmods

same thing happened to me but I managed to fix it.
first thing I did was to disable steam cloud saves for Windrose
Then I went to the save folder location of the game (it is called Save Profile). Copied it to desktop, then I deleted the save folder (not the one I copied) and launched Windrose.

The game should make a new character, I just hit next until I hit the main menu and exited the game.
After that I went to the newly created save folder, and looked for a folder with numbers on it (there should be two, ignore the one named back ups)
Inside of the folder with numbers, there should be a folder named RocksDB delete the contents inside. [This part is important]

After deleting it i went back to the backed up folder on your desktop. now head into the folder with numbers_back up. there should be lots of folders with numbers on it. those are the back ups that the game made. make the folder from earliest to latest. now choose one of the folders and copy the contents inside and paste it on to the RocksDB folder from earlier. Personally for me the first 2-3 back up folders failed on me.

Interestingly enough, I let it run for 20 minutes or so... this eventually came up

Follow the steps in the chat between me and Apophiscurse, it will fix it for you if the problem is related to your save files

If it's not, then I suggest re-installing the game

but 90% chance it is and you just didnt follow along correctly, give it another go 🙂

Just please remember to take a backup of the SaveProfiles folder by renaming it to saveprofiles.old before you do anything

that way if you mess up you can copy paste and start again

Nothing is working for me, pretty sure my 135hrs is all gone and im still stuck on loading screen

OK, so HUGE thanks to @jagged pond and @sly wadi ! A couple of intersting notes for the Devs... 1) After deleting the erroneous extra user - I restarted and the SAME ERRONEOUS USER id was recreated. 2) I deleted it again and turned off Steam Cloud save and it worked. Looking in the subdirectories now, all looks clean. Thanks again all.

so yesterday I fixed it by turning off steam cloud and just deleting all my characters and world saves and restarting. I made a bunch of worlds and characters after fixing it and just got back on today (steam cloud has been turned off the whole time) and I have infinite loading again. Is there any way to stop it from messing up my files so I don't have to do this every day I log on?

Go into accounts folder under R5/... /0.10.0/ look if there is more than 1 numbers directory

think I had 1 player 1 world when I closed the game yesterday

I can just delete the worlds and players to fix it again, but I dont want to keep having to do this, and I plan on creating multiple worlds and characters every day and want to keep one world/character that I progress on that I won't be abandoning
