I've completed the tutorial, and most of the challenges, Dr. Galen showed up, but I can't find his boat anywhere. Is there something special you have to do for the boat to show up? Can't leave the starter island without it in order to rescue the crew and find a bigger boat.

Re-assign him to your bonfire. Then talk to him again, he should give you a quest that gives the boat.
