Thanks for the report! This issue is caused in most cases either by playing with mods or by Steam Cloud corrupting the saves during sync. We're still working on a fix, but for now we implemented an auto backup feature to help to avoid losing progress.
HOW TO RESTORE BACKUP
Disable Steam Cloud Saves for Windrose.
Go to:
ā¢ C:\Users\ %username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\ %your_Steam_ID%_Backups
ā¢ Select the latest backup (or any preferred one). Backups are named by date and time.
ā¢ Copy all contents from this folder (it should contain one folder + AccountDescription.json).
ā¢ Navigate to:
C:\Users\ %username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\ {your_Steam_ID}\RocksDB
ā¢ Paste the copied files there (replace existing files if prompted).

This is great, but even with the backup added and the cloud settings turned off, it still creates a new steam cloud VDF file in the save folder and bricks the game again on the next startup. This did work, but just to clarify, it was only temporary. I just retried because my last backup apparently didn't apply the last few hours of work I did last night before I had the issue this morning.
